╚═══*.·:·.☽✧ ✦ ✧☾.·:·.*═══╝A meeting between Oyakata-sama and the pillars would be held today and you were asked to play the role of entertainer, play music. This has always helped Oyakata-sama focus and as always you devoted yourself to the given task. This was the least you could do, now that you were unable to fight.
In your sky-blue, cloud-patterned kimono, you sat down on the cushion the young Hinaki had put there, expressively for you. The Ubuyashiki always refused to hire maids or guards. Yet, there they were, helping you out. Putting down your pillow, handing you out your instrument. They said it was a sign of respect as you look over them. You'd take it as pity from others but not from them. "Thank you, Hinaki-sama." you thanked her as she put down the shamisen at your knees. She smiled. "I'll go get prepared for the meeting. I'll leave you at your...practice. Is that what you call it?"
"It's more like a meditation in my case, but you're right, Hinaki-sama."
"I'm looking forward to what you'll play today, Urokodaki-san," she left. Urokodaki. You inherited this name from your father, former water Hashira. You went to reach the wooden kitsune mask your father had carved for you years ago. The waves of water he had painted on it, were immaculate. You brought the mask to your lips, kissing the right ear, bringing you courage. Give me the courage to face Giyuu, please. You looked down at your legs. A side of the kimono was square, pointing out you had a prominent wood prosthesis that served as a leg. He might get mad to know I haven't retired...Not completely. What am I saying? He'll want to end me!
﹝•••﹞
"Yoh!" you called as you started playing, your slim fingers sliding on the chords with precision. Your mask muffled your voice and you played the shamisen delicately so Oyakata-sama could correctly greet each arriving pillar, which was rare, as he'd usually wait for everyone to arrive. His state must be better then. You smiled at this. Your smile didn't last long though. Giyuu arrived.
"You should have been more cautious."
Even when you were bedridden, you refused to gave in. "Giyuu. He was so young. A mizunoto against such a strong demon. I should have let him die!?"
"(y/n)."
"Giyuu!"
That was your last conversation. Just after the loss of your leg. Now, thinking about it, you didn't listen to his feelings enough. It must have been terribly hard for him to see you with a stump instead of a leg. Yet, you still hold your side. It still felt as you had done the right thing for the young mizunoto.
Oyakata-sama spoke up once the water Hashira got closer. "Greetings Giyuu." The raven-haired didn't budge and stared at you.
"Tomioka-san?" questioned Mitsuri.
"Tomioka-san, Oyakata-sama's talking to you," called Shinobu. At this, Giyuu's ocean eyes widened and he immediately kneeled down. "I apologize."
"Don't. You were simply surprised to see a friend of yours." Oyakata-sama turned his head toward you. "Ara, ara~ A friend?"
Oyakata-sama smiled. "I'll make sure the two of you will have some time to discuss following the meeting." he addressed Giyuu. "Now, shall we start?"
﹝•••﹞
You gazed upon the cherry blossoms tree under the evening rays of the sun. To others, you must have looked peaceful, your hair, untied, the mask, removed, bare feet in the grass. The truth was...you were worried, fearing the time Giyuu would emerge. Soon enough, you heard leaves getting crushed under steps. "(y/n)." There he was. "(y/n), I know you're hearing me. Don't play deaf."
"I won't apologize."
"You should have entirely quit the corps when you lost your leg." he glanced upon your wooden foot.
"And run away from my duty? I'm safer than ever. I'm by Oyakata-sama's side. Almost no demon has the guts to come even close."
He grabbed your hand and pulled you to face him. Your heart skipped a beat when you saw his eyes. They were wet. As when he cried about the loss of his sister back in the years. "It's not like that!" You and your father were the only ones to whom he dared show his emotions. You two grew up together, after all. "Tomi-" Screw etiquette! "Giyuu." You squeezed his hand. "I can defend myself. You know I can fight but...I can send you a letter every week if it would reassure you."
"No need to change your routine for me. It's not that important..." There he was, guilty of having feelings. It broke your heart to see him like that. You missed the smiling and joyful Giyuu you had first met. It took him so much time to open up after his sister's death and then Sabito perished and there was no helping it. But just telling him not to worry, wouldn't be enough to convince him. "I write a letter to my father every week. It's already included in my routine. It really wouldn't be a bother."
"I see. Well, if that's the case, I'd like that."
"I want you to write me too though! M'kay?" You raised your pinky. "We're not children."
"Come on Gigi!" He snorted at the memory of the nickname you gave him in your youth and reached his pinky out to yours. "Promise!"
