dont u think (Requiem)

What was that?

Did you ask me if I spoke teenager?

Well maybe I'll give it a try,

but really dont u think

that this is all really beyond us

dont u know

of those who died 2 soon

2 soon 2 c those of us struggling under the trail left behind

by overachievers and underestimators,

of those who died 2 soon

2 soon 2 hear my requiem?

dont u think

i deserve a little medal

telling me im so nice

bc dont u think

ive spent a little 2 much time

being self-conscious about what i call my makeup?

oh but arent u thinking

using ur poor excuse of a brain

that makeup must be the stuff i smear on my face?

well id love it if u thought

that for me kindness is prettier

than any kind of lipstick?

and screw ur blush and ur eyeshadow and ur mascara

u think i hate myself

but dont u think

its lovely how my cheeks turn rosy

when my friends smile at me?

dont u think my eyes are beautiful

when theyre filled with the laughter of life?

dont u think my eyelashes are so elegant

when i look at the sun

grateful for all the life it brings?

dont u think ur the hating one

for turning ur back on my ppl?

but its ok

while u scream urself blind

we will be riding into the horizon

breaking free of all our chains

4 we are the sons, the daughters, and the children of this earth

and we are born more equal, more beautiful, and more innocent than we can imagine

dont u think

mother earth gave birth 2 us 2

and we deserve more than a glance once in a while

dont u think

we are mathematicians, authors, musicians

engineers, businesspeople, inventors

scientists, teachers, presidents

mayors, poets, programmers

and most of all

dont u think

we are warriors

who rise from the ashes of ourselves

only to become greater, stronger

and better than before

dont u think

i deserve someone by my side

4 all the times ive had my heart broken

only so i can pick it up again

and tape it back together

dont u think

i deserve to go home

to where i know i wont be scolded

for every step i take

dont u think

i deserve a crispy high 5

4 all the times i was the last one in the water

abandoned by the escapers

who had refused to do their job,

the lazy idiots

dont u think

that theres many of us

just quietly planning our potential

and shooting for the moon

dont u think

that we deserve a story

where our anthem doesnt define as a requiem?

So if you ask me if I speak teenager,

I say no

I say that teenager is not a language

Where "you" translates to "u"

And "I" becomes "i"

And numbers litter the page

I say that teenager is not an age

Where we are crushed by our melancholy

And trapped by our makeup

I say that teenager is nothing

Because don't you think

That we are people too?
