Daisuke
The first thing I noticed about jail was the noise.
Not yelling.
Not fighting.
Buzzing.
Lights buzzing overhead.
Vents humming through the walls.
Keys clanking.
Shoes scraping against concrete.
It never fully went quiet.
Even now, sitting alone in the freezing cell, I could still hear all of it blending together into one endless sound that made my head pound.
So instead of listening to the noise around me—
I thought about Nova.
That was worse.
Because every time I closed my eyes, I saw her face when they dragged me away.
Crying.
Terrified.
Looking at me like her entire world was collapsing all over again.
I leaned my head back against the wall and shut my eyes anyway.
Immediately, another memory surfaced.
"Stay still," Nova laughs softly. "You're gonna make me mess up the painting."
I grin from where I'm sitting.
"I doubt you can mess up anything."
She rolls her eyes while trying to dodge my attempt to kiss her.
"You say that now until your face comes out looking like a lump of paint."
I laugh quietly.
"Okay, okay. I'll stay still. But I want my kiss later."
"I know," she says, shaking her head with a smile.
The memory shifts.
A hour later, she finally steps back from the canvas proudly.
"Okay," she says excitedly. "I'm done. Tell me what you think."
I walk over toward the painting.
And honestly—
It steals my breath for a second.
It's a realistic portrait of me, the background is painted this rich vibrant blue while silver details crown the top of my head like something out of mythology.
Flowers woven carefully into the design.
She painted me like I was something beautiful.
Something worthy of being admired.
"You really made me look like a Greek god," I laugh softly.
"Dramatic."
"No seriously," I grin. "This is insane."
I immediately pull my phone out.
"What are you doing?" she laughs.
"Taking a picture."
"For what?"
"I'm sending it to my friends so I can brag about how talented my girlfriend is."
"You're obsessed."
I step closer to her slowly.
"I'm more than obsessed."
Then I kiss her cheek.
