"I know they said the end is near"
Today was Graduation.
Not mine, Louis'. Well, at least it was meant to be Louis'. It was 10:02 am in the morning, and graduation started at 5pm. It was Saturday. I was contemplating whether or not I should go. I had no reason to be there.
Louis' tutoring didn't really work out. Though, Mrs Partridge did reach out to me again to tell me not to worry, and that Louis had found a new tutor. I was relieved, but with the minimal time he had I doubted he'd graduate. I was lying still in bed, watching my clock closely as each hand shifted by the second. By quarter past, I had barely pulled myself out of bed to the bathroom. I showered, and picked something comfortable to wear for the day. I dried my hair with a towel, then made my way back to my bedroom. I made my bed, got out my laptop and hit shuffle on my playlist while I caught up on some schoolwork. I started to fall asleep, and found my self awake again before I knew it I was in a big mess of earbuds and pillows. My hair was completely dry, which means it had been at least an hour. I looked at my clock. Shit! It was 3:24. I'd been asleep for four hours. I picked up my phone, and had a few missed alerts, but only one stuck out to me. It was from Louis. I first read over the other ones, ____ liked your post, missed call from _____, before tapping on Louis text.
Louis
Hi y/n.
I just wanted to let you know
that I made it to graduation. I
know the circumstances but i'd really
love if you'd be able to come. The
ceremony starts at 5. And we're
all going to dinner after. Let
me know if you can come so
we can make a booking for you.
Louis made it. He was graduating today. I was so excited for him, so proud that he'd finally made it to this moment. But deep inside, a wallowing sense of melancholy. He was leaving. All those years of meeting at lunch, recess, in the bathrooms during class, our lockers right beside each other, its all over. And what if he studies abroad? I know we've had our problems, many of them, but we've been through so much together, so much that goodbye just wont be easy.
I texted him back.
Louis
omg yes, i'll be there.
thanks a bunch for the invite!
So, it was settled. Louis was graduating, and I was going. I got out of bed, and ran downstairs to tell my parents. "Mum, dad, guess what!" I yelled from the kitchen. "Yes?" I heard the response come from the living room, so I wandered over there. "Louis, is graduating," I said. A big grin appeared on both my parents' faces. "Tell him that we're so proud," Mum said. Dad didn't say anything, he's not a very touchy person. "Yep, I will. The actual ceremony starts at 5, and theres a dinner afterwards with his family which I got invited to, you guys are welcome to come."
"Thanks y/n, but im a bit tired, I think im just gonna stay home."
"Yeah, me too honey, sorry." My dad joined in.
"No problem, just wanted to let you know."
I turned around and made my way back up to my room. The clock read 3:35, so I had plenty of time. I did my hair into a half up, half down braid type thing, and searched around my closet for an outfit. I'd never been to a graduation before, so I wasn't really sure if there was a dress code or rules I had to abide by, so I decided to try stick to neutrals. To keep it formal, I decided on a dress. I settled on a light blue, butterfly sleeved floral midi dress. I found some white heeled sandals which would do, jewellery, and a small little white bow to add to the back of my hair. This was the nicest i'd looked in a while, and I was kind of looking forward to the ceremony. The time read 4pm. I put on some light makeup, put on my shoes, and readied myself to walk out the door. Though the ceremony starts at 5, they want guests seated at 4.45pm, and I was meeting at Louis' house beforehand with his parents. He wont be there though, he has to get to the venue early. The ceremony isn't taking place at school, its happening at some random hall on the other side of the city so time was limited. Taking one last look in the mirror, I headed downstairs, phone in clutch, yelled goodbye to my parents, and made my way to the bus stop to get to their house. The bus ride was short, as per usual. When I got off at the stop, I noticed it was starting to sprinkle, so I really had to make a run for it. I made it to their house, and knocked on the door, sheltered by the roof over the porch. Within seconds, the door opened and I was greeted by Mrs Partridge, beaming. "Y/n, oh you look so beautiful, come in!" She was clearly very happy, and proud. She was wearing a navy long dress, down to her ankles, and black heels. "Louis is so happy you could come, you should've seen him before. As soon as he got your text, he ran downstairs to tell us with a big smile on his face." She chuckled. I smiled, as I could feel my face turning red. "Is that so?" I laughed.
