The sound of sirens filled my ears. I could smell the smoke in the air. When I opened my eyes I saw Derek being carried onto an ambulance. His clothes were scorched and his skin looked burned. Black covered his face. "Did, did I do that?" I softly whispered under my breath. "Are you ok kid," an officer said as he motioned his medical team over to check me. I shook my head. "No burns sir. Just a couple cuts," a medic said as he took his gloves off.
When arriving to the hospital, I saw my mother and father waiting at the entrance.
"Shane!" my mother yelled with tears in her eyes. "Der-," I chocked up and held back my tears. "I know. He's not," she stopped. I could tell she couldn't bring her self to say it.
The doctor soon took my parents in the room to see him. I stayed in my hospital room. Was I dreaming? What's going on? I felt pressure on my chest. It was the same feeling I had in the car. My hands got hot. "Crap! Calm down, calm down, calm down," I told myself.
The door to my room opened,"Son,your brother wants to see you. Alone." My father said while holding my mother tightly in his arms as she sobbed. My heart raced. "Go son,"he whispered. I did as I was told.
Our doctor led me to the room. I slowly opened the door and walked in. The smell of burnt flesh filled my nose. "Shane?" Derek's voice was raspy and weak. He layed on his hospital bed with his eyes closed. "I'm so sorry! I don't know what that was or what's going on!" I blurted out as tears ran down my cheeks. The cuts on my face stung from my tears. "Shane, you have to promise me you will never get caught doing what you did. Never let anyone find out what you can do. You can't let anyone know." He said. "I promise," I said without thinking. "Control is key." Derek replied. I've never heard him talk like this. Why would he want to protect me after what I did? Before I could say anything, Derek let out a deep breath. his heart monitor went flat. He was gone.
