' as long as we don't die ...

this is gonna be one hell of a story . '

By all accounts, Rylee Edwards was gone.

Three desperate friends had searched relentlessly for her, checking all of her normal haunts, asking anyone that might have any information. Leads dried up. No one had any more information than they had the day before. At the height of the summer, the Pogues had been a group of six, and now that number had dwindled to three. The aftermath of two assumed deaths, and a suspected runaway.

No one had been too surprised. Rylee had no one, nothing, other than her small group of friends. Her father had died, leaving behind a shell of a wife with no interest besides getting as much drugs and alcohol as possible into her system. Working two to three jobs just to try and stay alive, being chased and threatened by drug dealers, involved in a ridiculous treasure hunt, maybe she was better off gone.

Local police offered no assistance and no answers. A teenage runaway from the poor side of the island was the least of their worries when they were still trying to solve the murder of the previous town sheriff.

A dead cell phone with a cracked screen sat zipped up tight in a duffel bag in the beach shack she most closely associated with home, texts and phone calls going unanswered. Where had she gone and why hadn't she taken her friends with her? Why hadn't she stuck it out for them, so they could get through it all together?

The summer had taught JJ Maybank one lesson above all others -- People die, and people leave. And there's nothing you can do about it.
