Two days had passed and Rylee hadn't heard a single word from anyone in Kildare.

There were two possible reasons why, she had figured. One option was that Anna hadn't passed her message along to Kiara -- whether that was intentionally or on accident -- and her friends still had no idea where she was. The alternative sent a rolling wave of nausea through her stomach every time Rylee considered it. Maybe Anna had passed on the message, given Kiara the number and told her what had happened and Kiara simply didn't want to get back to her.

Rylee was sure she was being dramatic, but she couldn't seem to stop the thoughts from creeping in. She spent every hour of every day wondering, thinking about her friends and what they were doing or how they were feeling. She looked at the door to the diner every single time the bell that hung above it jingled, signaling someone entering the restaurant. Maybe Kiara couldn't call her back or come get her, but JJ would. JJ would have taken a bus, a ferry, hitchhiked to come find her. Wouldn't he?

The letter from C. Limbrey felt like it was burning a hole in the bottom of her backpack. She read the words over and over, multiple times a day, hoping she could decipher something or find some secret hidden message. She and Natasha had discussed the possibility of her catching a bus to Charleston, going to the address and getting some information. Her fear of what it could mean, what this person would tell her about her mother was what held her back.

Rylee walked into the auto shop, her fingers crossed tightly as she walked in, hoping with all of her might that she might hear good news.

Terry, bent over the open engine of a car, looked up and met her eyes as soon as she stepped in. Rylee held her breath, but Terry gave her the answer to her question by giving a small shake of his head.

Rylee's heart dropped deep into the pit of her stomach, and she let out a long sigh of disappointment. She knew she had one more choice, an option she really didn't want to consider. But how much longer was she willing to wait? Even if it wasn't exactly how she wanted to get home, was it better than just crossing her fingers and hoping she'd get there eventually? One way or another, Rylee was not going to sit around and wait.

With Terry's permission, Rylee slipped back into his office and dug through her backpack until she found her list. All of the numbers had been scribbled out, some with more frustration than others, only two numbers remained, one of them being The Wreck.
