I know I like Jan and he likes me, but it's all a little surreal. We met only a month ago and things have been, surprisingly, moving at a much quicker pace than I'd like.
Exiting my apartment, Jan graciously took my bag and threw it over his shoulder while I locked the door. As we stood in the hallway, we debated whether to take the stairs or the elevator. Eventually, we settled on the claustrophobic chamber - the elevator.
The doors opened and I stepped in, pulling Jan beside me. He pressed the ground floor button before smoothly intertwining our hands, flashing me a smile. I wonder where we're going, but I trust him.
Suddenly, a realisation struck me, "I forgot my meds," my eyes widened. Not even a second later, he promptly stopped the elevator and we both stepped out.
In a hurry, I sprinted up the two flights of stairs and unlocked the creaky door to my apartment. With my shoes still on, I tiptoed to my bedside table and retrieved the orange bottle, pocketing it. With the front door still open, I could hear Jan whistling his tune. I joined in by humming along as I exited the small apartment, locking the door once again, the sound of the keys rattling in my cold hand echoing.
He patiently waited for me, hands tucked into his pockets. I smiled at him and decided to take the stairs this time instead. He followed suit.
He held open the heavy metal door for me, bowing. I let out a slight chuckle and thanked him as his hand found mine, again. Together, we finally strolled to his place.
We arrived after a while and curiosity got the best of me, "Where are we going?" I asked while untying my shoelaces. He didn't respond.
"Like, what should I wear? Something fancy? Comfy?" I continued, now standing up straight.
"Maybe something fancy," he replied, completely ignoring my initial question. I shot him a glare, but he remained silent, a smirk playing on his lips. "No I will not tell you," he saw right through me. Now that's some real mind-reader shit. I rolled my eyes and made my way to the kitchen.
"We should go grocery shopping sometime," I yelled, ensuring that Jan could hear me. Opening his cupboard, I grabbed a packet of dried mangoes, struggling to open it. Jan the gentleman came to rescue, opening the packet and taking a few pieces for himself as a reward.
I filled two glasses with water and brought them to the coffee table with the mangoes. We sat down, engaging in a conversation about anything and everything.
"We should get ready," he announced, standing up and heading towards the bedroom. I nodded in agreement, occupying the bathroom after gathering my bags, and turned on the lights.
Seeing our toothbrushes side by side from the morning brought a smile to my face. Cute.
I started with my makeup, feeling a bit unsure about what look to go for. Opening Pinterest for inspiration, I was overwhelmed by the countless options. Eventually, I settled on a smoky eyeliner and dark red lips.
Next up: hair
Using some of Jan's hair oil, I slicked my red hair up into a neat bun. He also had hairspray, so I used a little to make sure everything stayed in place. Just in case, you know.
Choosing an outfit proved to be quite a challenge. Nothing seemed to match the hair and makeup. Finally, I settled on a mid-length emerald green silk dress. Who cares if I look like a Christmas tree? Certainly not me. A pair of gold hoops and a dainty necklace completed the look.
As I applied some lip gloss and did last touch-ups, Jan knocked on the door. "Come on in, it's open," I sang, examining my nails.
He entered, his mouth dropping open in awe. "Wow," he whispered, leaning against the door frame. I blew him a kiss, which he caught and placed on his heart. With his mouth still agape, I walked towards him, playfully closing it with my ring finger.
"You look absolutely gorgeous, Julia" he murmured. "The same goes for you, Jan" I replied, scanning him from head to toe. He mirrored my actions, doing the exact same thing.
Clearing his throat, he handed me a bouquet of red roses, a smirk playing on his lips. I looked at him in awe this time, swiftly pecking the corner of his mouth before taking the flowers.
"Oh my - thank you, but...when did you find the time for all of this?" I asked, gesturing towards the bouquet. "One word: Sophie," he chuckled.
"That makes sense," I smiled, inhaling the fragrance of the roses before placing them on the white shelf. He found a vase, filled it with room temperature water, and carefully arranged the bouquet inside.
I rummaged through my bag and found my black platform heels, slipping them on. Now, I was almost the same height as Jan. That was until he put on his loafers. I took out my phone and sent a quick 'thank you' text to Sophie.
"Are we ready to go?" he asked, extending his hand to me like a true gentleman. "Yes, of course," I replied, gladly accepting his hand. Jan turned off all the lights, and we left his place, ready for our evening together.
