Sophie sat stiffly in the interrogation room, her fingers interlocked in her lap as the detective stared at her from across the table. The room smelled of stale coffee and printer ink, the fluorescent lighting casting an almost clinical glow over everything. She was trying not to fidget, but the weight of the situation pressed down on her.
"The video was sent to us by an anonymous source," Sophie told the detectives, keeping her voice steady. "Probably the same person who sent it to you."
The detective raised an eyebrow. "It was sent to you?"
Sophie blinked, barely suppressing the urge to roll her eyes. "That is what I just said, yeah," she nodded. "It was loaded onto Spencer's laptop. Only this time, the video was longer, and we saw who Alison was talking to. It was Ian."
"Ian Thomas?"
"Yes," Sophie confirmed. "He told Alison to 'come closer,' and she did. After that, it sounded like a struggle, and then... we just saw Alison's hand on the ground." She swallowed hard, the memory of that chilling footage flashing through her mind. "That video proves Alison and Ian were together the night she died."
The detective scribbled something in his notebook, his pen moving methodically. "Is there anything else?"
"Yes," Sophie said, inhaling sharply. "Ian and Alison were together the weekend before she went missing."
"And how do you know this?"
Sophie glanced at the detective's face, trying to gauge whether he already knew the answer. "We had our suspicions that Alison was lying to us. She told us she went golfing with her grandmother at Hilton Head, but her grandmother lives in Georgia, not South Carolina," she explained, keeping her voice even. "So Spencer called Hilton Head, and they confirmed Ian was there that weekend. With Alison."
The detective narrowed his eyes slightly. "Was there any other younger girl that he was interested in?"
Sophie hesitated for half a second before lying smoothly. "No."
Of course, that wasn't the truth. Ian had been interested in Spencer. He had been interested in a lot of girls. But Sophie couldn't say that. She wouldn't. She had to protect Spencer—and, in turn, protect herself.
The detective studied her for a moment longer before finally shutting his notebook. "I think we've gotten all the information we can for now," he said. "You can go, Miss Langford."
Sophie let out a breath she hadn't realized she was holding and stood up, pushing her chair back carefully. She walked out of the interrogation room, her legs feeling unsteady beneath her. Outside, the rest of the girls were waiting.
