Kaitlin:

Thanks to my familiar, fire magic was the first my mother taught me, so it was humiliating how much damage I'd done. I've been out of practice and knew it but still, it pissed me off. That bugger was fast so I hadn't been able to use my affinity for air and freeze him where he stood. I'd cornered him with fire instead because I needed him alive. Worse, I'd been ordered to take him in without a scratch which made using air a no go. Burns didn't count as scratches right? Like how was I supposed to bring him scratch free when he was supposedly a grown full blood fae?

Bullies.

Fae were freaking bullies.

And I don't get paid nearly enough.

I exhaled and reminded myself that I only had a few more years until my debt was  fully paid. Yet here I was, walking straight into werewolf private territory... Or rather was forced to the moment that fae runt crossed over.

And boy did wolves love witches on their land.

I let out another long breath and remembered that the hard part was over. I'd baked cookies and delivered them to the local Alpha. I knew his wolf had run back home and told the Alpha about what he'd seen so I'd been sure to come with an olive branch that would soften the sting of "your witch neighbour torched a few dozen of your trees." I'd seen him eat peanut butter cookies before so I baked some and added some chocolate for good measure.

It was only when I'd pulled up in front of the Alpha's mansion that it dawned on me that not everybody liked chocolate. I would've went back had I not already parked and practically announced by presence with the sound of my old truck's engine to all werewolves in the immediate area. I needed to stay in the Alpha's good graces so he'd let me stay and get this old debt to the fae done and over with.

I focused on the trees and undoing what I did. I could try clearing the debris, healing the soil and regrowing the trees but I'd probably pass out and leave behind saplings in place of mature trees. Instead I focused on rewinding time just right to let nature retake it's course.

Woefully, I couldn't do the same to my life. It only worked on inanimate objects. Healing was behind me unless I had the help of plants but that in itself was one whole group of spells I couldn't master for the life of me. Nearly everything else came naturally. I even tried and failed to come up with my own healing spells. I was hopeless in that area.

Fifteen minutes later I was done one area and moved onto the next. Had I come earlier, I could've fixed this a lot faster but I had 10 hours of death to reverse. The fae had me personally escort the fae back to their realm and the time here on Earth moved faster. A few minutes in the fae realm was hours here, give or take. In my experience, the time difference was never consistent.

Although to be fair, as much as I wanted to place the blame on them, using that much fire was more draining since I was naturally more cold given my affinity. It would've been nice if I'd been able to get proper sleep prior to this.

I finished up and passed through a Tim Horton's drive thru to grab a late breakfast. A large coffee and a few cookies later, I was still hungry but like sleep, it needed to wait.

I had already left the shop closed more than I should've. Would you look at that... I spotted a young girl in her teens waiting outside. I parked swiftly. Normally Javier, who had self pro-claimed himself my protégé, ran the shop while I was away but yesterday's mishap hadn't been planned, and I had asked him to come in last minute. This meant switching my night shift for his morning one.

I greeted the girl with a smile, touched my ward to make certain it hadn't been touched or damaged and let her in first when I was sure there was no danger inside. I only knew one being who could teleport past it, and he wouldn't harm a human unless provoked.
