Kaitlin:

I avoided the flecks of gold that played along his irises and his messy chestnut hair. He must've ran his hands through it multiple times on his way over to me after I called him. His claws were hidden but each step he made was deeply suffused with power, and I wasn't for a second tricked into thinking he wouldn't just up and kill me. I had called Devlin prior to Seth and gotten a quick response. I knew he reached out to Sethan as soon I had hung up on Sethan. Devlin wasn't happy but he understood. He knew I had to protect myself.

I reached for my drink as I steered clear of Sethan's face. I paid attention to his body and every inch of it confirmed my suspicions already. Devlin hadn't soothed him at all. I took a sip because I wanted to say something, anything to my defence, but I figured it often worked out better when the control freaks spoke first.

His voice sent a chill down the base of my neck and all the way down my spine, "We had a deal." He stood next to me by the bar. I did my best to remain sitting as I was. I had turned my body towards him, but was slightly leaning on the counter and stirring the thin short straw the bartender had decided to place in my whiskey sour.

I'd thought of going to Bobby's pub but decided that there would be a few too many bloodthirsty fae around and I needed to be calm, and Sethan needed to calm down.

I risked meeting his eyes and instantly wished I hadn't. Sethan was scarier than his father. For a moment I wished I was dealing with the Alpha because Gabriel cared more about what was best for the pack verses indulging in impulses. That's exactly the feeling Sethan always gave off. It had been the reason why I'd stupidly mouthed off in front of him a bit too much. It was either that, run or be a sitting duck.

I was strong, sure, but there was no telling how I'd match up with him until we actually fought. A lie, I told myself. Fighting wouldn't help me. The only chance was if I had his blood. I felt it in my bones. He didn't need to know that though. Like Roman said, make them fear you.

Keeping my head down hadn't kept the wolves away and I needed them away. I needed to finish my three years without a hitch. It wasn't just my head on the chopping block. As scary as Sethan could be, the Queen was worse. He might have a chance if she let him get close. Problem was she wouldn't. I'd seen her kill people simply by meeting their eyes.

I kept my response short and honest, "Yours touched me first." I explained like I had on the phone and watched as the corner of his temple twitched. His missing claws didn't fool me. His wolf was extremely close to the surface. I kept a dagger ready. I knew monsters when I saw them. I was one and had been trying to change. Clearly, no dice. I'll leave that to Javier.

"Funny. You look perfectly fine." Sethan spoke and sat next to me on the small stool. The scary part was that his voice had come out completely human. As evident by his eyes, there was no way his human side was in control right now. He was struggling to keep his wolf at bay.

I watched quietly as he waved away the bartender that had been heading in his direction. I almost let a breath out but couldn't quite yet. Sethan had looked like he was about to drag me out and eat me out. And it wasn't the good kind of eating out. Not that I wanted to get laid by him in this very moment. Heck, I'd take his half monster form any day.

I was used to monsters.

If you avoided his eyes and how tight his jaw was set, right now he looked like a model who escaped from a fitness magazine.

I refrained from telling him why I looked "fine" and silently regretted changing into my spare change of clothes I kept in my truck. I'd thought my blood would make him hungrier but maybe it would've given him pause. I thought about explaining that to him but I didn't want his pity. My breath left me as I realized there would no longer be something resembling peace between the wolves and I. Maybe I'll walk around invisible and think up some spell to mask my scent every time I needed to visit Noah. I'd been losing them on my way there but had failed this last time.
