Kaitlin:

When the door shut behind Devlin, Sethan turned around. I kept the edge of my bedsheet bundled between my two fingers. Rubbing them together softly was bringing me an odd kind of comfort.

But reality was waiting for me and I knew I needed to face it.

I also needed to explain things to everyone who wasn't there.

But how much did I share when I wasn't really certain of everything? Had Roman really betrayed me for a demon? No. I recalled what the demon said. It had told Charles to feed and leave the souls for them to take. Had Roman betrayed me for blood?

I recalled only seeing Jane and how weak she was. Was the blood and volunteers the government was providing the vampires not enough?

Was Roman's uncle, Augustus, the Vampire King of Ember City, in on these plans? Was this another attempt to take over the human government? No. Killing civilians blindlessly didn't seem like a fruitful plan. So why did Roman sit by as I got stabbed? Why had he left me to die knowing what I would become if I actually did die?

He knew what kind of a monster Cyrus had become after death. He also knew I dreaded the very thought of becoming like him.

I bit my tongue and waited for Sethan to speak.

"Take your time." Sethan said. My head shot up. I met his eyes before he turned. They were soft and back to their human medium brown.

I sucked in a breath and found myself struggling to let it go.

Sethan left me alone with an imprinted image of his sad smile. He'd been fine a second ago. He'd been angry a minute ago. My confusion deepened. I had missed something with him and didn't know what. I didn't have time to figure out what it was though.

I shut my eyes as I gathered myself. When I opened them and got up, I realized someone had dressed me in one of my baggy shirts. Parts of my hair was also strangely wet and smelled earthy and almost a bit floral. I recalled the green bottle Devlin had tossed to Sethan. They had likely submerged me in some kind of magic liquid. I lifted my shirt and found my wound stitched and an angry red. Magic indeed.

I undressed and changed while trying not to think of who changed me.

When I opened my door to my living room, I so did not expect to see everything I owned that could possibly be improvised as a chair to be occupied by a werewolf.

Oh my f- There's what... eight of them?

Nobody said a word as my eyes wandered around the room, and landed on the water bottle Sethan offered me off to my left by the door. Not even Javier who was sitting next to Jared on the couch or Devlin who was standing in the archway to the kitchen.

When did they...

I accepted the water and found out I was thirsty. That earned me a snarky brow lift from Devlin. They were all waiting for me to speak and I was unintentionally drawing it out.

I stopped drinking immediately.

Alright. Time to see how fast I can clear a room.

I told them almost everything except I left out the part where the demon mentioned Roman. But I did include the part where Roman had disappeared without helping. I decided to let them each draw their conclusion about him. A conclusion that I was realizing that I was refusing to accept myself.

When I was done, Devlin spoke up first, "Was Roman in on it?"

That was the question that was still eating me alive. I considered it again for the hundredth time, "Unlike the other vampires, he didn't seem hungry and as far as I saw, he didn't drink or kill anyone."
