Peter sat in your room, day in and day out, for nearly two weeks. It had been a roller coaster. There were days when the doctors were very optimistic about a full recovery. The gash in your head had been stitched up. You had a few broken ribs and deep bruising on various parts of your body. Your legs suffered second degree burns, but the rest of your body only had minor burns. Your heart was working hard because of the damage the smoke had done to your lungs. There were days that were touch and go, days when your heart would race for no reason and it took a while to get your heart rate to come down. There were days when your hands would flutter and Peter was sure his wife would wake up and there were days when you laid perfectly still, like a statue. Dr. Stafford and Maria had been to visit multiple times. Each time they brought food for Peter and stayed to talk with him for hours. They would talk to you too, keep you up to date with everything going on in their lives, and hoped that you would awaken to talk to them. Detective Lewis and Captain Brody had even checked in on you a few times, but every visitor left disappointed. Peter sat, watching your face. The bruising was starting to disappear and you were looking more like yourself.
"Hey Darling, I really need you to wake up. I miss you so much," Peter whispered, kissing your forehead softly and holding your hand. He swore that he noticed your eyebrows flinch when he kissed you, but a doctor entered and interrupted his thoughts.
"Hello, are you Mr. Parker?" the doctor asked. She was an older woman, a doctor he hadn't seen before.
"Yes, I'm Peter, hi," Peter said, offering his hand for a handshake. The doctor shook it and gestured for him to sit back down beside you. She took a chair on the opposite wall of the small hospital room.
"Hi Peter, my name is Cynthia Willis, I'm doctor here. I was called in by Dr. Grookey to look over Y/N and get a second opinion. I have some very promising news for you," she stated and waited for Peter to nod before continuing. "It seems that Y/N is healing up very nicely, it's just taking a bit longer than we expected. I decided to run a few tests, just to try to determine why she wasn't waking up. I'm not sure why these tests weren't run in the beginning, but no matter, we have the results now and I am very confident I know why she is still not awake." Peter was dumbfounded and waiting for an explanation. Why was this woman smiling so wide when his wife was still unconscious? He nodded once again, begging the woman to continue with his eyes. "It would seem that her body is under more stress than usual..." she let the sentence hang. Peter was growing impatient, of course her body was under more stress! She had been through the ringer physically, mentally, and emotionally.
"Ok...? So what does that mean?" Peter asked curtly.
"Peter, it seems that your wife's body is working hard because it's sustaining another. She is six weeks pregnant by the looks of things. The baby is growing perfectly and appears unharmed by all of the turmoil. Congratulations, you're going to be a father," she stated, her smile somehow wider than before. "I'll leave you with that information. I'll be back to check on you and her in a few hours." With that, Dr. Willis stood up and exited the room nearly silently. Peter just sat in his seat, unmoving, for many minutes, his mind trying to grasp what he was just told. Every emotion he could imagine was running through his mind: fear, joy, excitement, insecurity. But after a minute, his mind decided on one overwhelming feeling and a huge smile spread across his face. He was going to be a dad! As if on cue, by some miracle, Peter noticed a twitch on your face. He was leaning over you, whispering gently, trying to coax you awake.
"Y/N, Darling, you have to wake up! I have the most exciting news for you. Please, Darling, please wake up..." he whispered. He watched as your eyes flickered and for the first time in what felt like ages, saw their beauty. "Hello, love," he said and smiled at you brightly.
"Oh Peter, I thought I was going to die," you managed, your voice raspy and painful. You took a deep breath and smiled. "I love you so much," you said, moving your hand to touch your husband's face. Tears streamed down his face as he placed a hand over yours and smiled at you. "Is it over, Peter?" you asked.
"It's over, Y/N. He's dead. The fire saw to that. You're safe," he said. He watched as you visibly relaxed, resting in the fact that it was all over. You were still so tired, even this small conversation had taken all of your energy and you could feel your eyes growing heavy.
"I'm so tired, Peter. I'm sorry," you stated, knowing that sleep would claim you soon. "What is your exciting news?" you asked, surprising Peter.
"You heard that?!" he asked, amazed. You simply nodded an answer and waited for him to continue. "Y/N, you're a mother. We're going to have a baby!" he whispered gently, kissing your forehead. You smiled as your mouth came opened, tears in your eyes.
"We're going to have a baby?" you asked, shocked but ecstatic.
"We're going to have a baby," Peter replied. Your eyes were getting heavy again, sleep threatening to take over. Peter laid in bed next to you, perfectly happy. He gently held you in his arms as you surrendered to sleep. He wasn't sure if it would be restful, he knew that the nightmares were likely to return for a while, but he hoped that dreams of the baby growing inside of you would fight them off. For the first time in a very long time, you were completely relaxed and content. Peter was safe, you were safe, the baby inside you was safe, and Mario Romano was gone forever. Peter felt your body relax against him and marveled at the sound of the heart monitor beating steadily. He knew that you still had a lot of recovery ahead of you, but for now he was content to have seen your eyes, even if only for a few minutes. There would always be work to be done, villains to be fought, mysteries to solve, but for this moment he laid still, completely and utterly happy with how his life had turned out.
