A/N: I was working to update and when re-reading it showed the last couple chapters out of order but it could've been a glitch so I'm just republishing it and working on the next chapter. :)
Two Weeks Later
"Look, if you're so worried that I might actually be pregnant, even though it's very impossible, let's go to a doctor." She tried to reason.
Elena was being as rational as possible with this very odd irrational situation. Every time this ridiculous prophecy entered her mind, she had to fight the compulsion to laugh hysterically. It was still preposterous. Just the thought alone. She would be lying, she supposed, if she said she didn't want to have a child. Hell, children. Especially with Kol. He was the love of her life. It was a dead secret dream of hers to have the chance. But he was a vampire. Dead. Incapable of procreation. His sperm is just as dead. The prophecy didn't change anything. It was probably as much a hoax as the Sun and Moon Curse was. But she was willing to entertain it for Kol's sake.
"Fine." He sighed in return. "We'll go. I won't lie to you, love. I've never wanted to be a father." It stung the slightest but she let it bounce off her for now.
"Don't worry. You won't be. The doctor will only confirm I'm not pregnant. It's not a real prophecy. It can't be. We'll protect Hope and stop Dahlia in a different way." Kol nodded. He wouldn't admit this but he did care for his niece and was just as desperate as anyone to protect her and stop his aunt.
Elena pushed herself higher on her toes to press her lips to his. The brief kiss was sweet, tender, and reassuring. It said we'll be ok. I love you. Both clinged to this unsaid promise.
Nervously tapping the uncomfortable leather of the bed in the doctor's office, Elena couldn't help being nervous. Couldn't fight it. No matter how sure she was that pregnancy was impossible. She'd been with no one but Kol since becoming human. So it was absolutely, undoubtedly impossible. Still, the apprehension stirred her stomach as she sat alone awaiting the test results. Her mind wandered to Kol. She asked him to stay back at the compound and wait for her. She knew she would get emotional either way. She didn't want him to see how upset she would be when it was confirmed that she was not with child and as long as she loved Kol, she never would be. As long as she was surrounded by the supernatural world, she'd be barren. But this was her world no matter what, there was no escaping it. It was a terrible place to bring up a child.
"Miss Gilbert?" The doctor entered cautiously, ripping her from her thoughts. She offered him a kind but nervous smile. The older woman flashed her a wide smile. "Well, congratulations are in order. You are indeed pregnant." A shiver ripped through Elena and shock caused her jaw to drop. Her mouth dried up. Heart raced faster.
"I— I— ... A— Are... Ar— Are you sure." This has to be wrong. The doctor nodded, dropping into a computer chair and scooting to her computer.
"No doubt. You are definitely pregnant." The doctor's fingers flew across the keyboard, typing rapidly. "No doubt. Approximately, six weeks." The first time she and Kol... was six weeks ago. Exactly.
Once the doctor left she stood up and changed back into her normal clothes before getting the hell out of there. She was numb. As much as she wanted to be excited, she was going to be a mom. She was also terrified. To bring a child up in this madness. And Kol. She loved him to death but he didn't want to be a father. Never has. None of the real panic and emotions had fully kicked in. The shock only allowed them to be known at the surface but not deeply.
Elena walked from the doctors back to the compound. Needing a little time to herself, she took little detours around the Quarter. She was sure to text Kol that she was walking and she was ok. He was clearly worried about her but she convinced him to not come look for her. Her eyes watered as her emotions set in. The excitement, the joy, the fear. What were they going to do? Screw the worry. Screw the fear. She was pregnant. She was going to be a mom. An opportunity she thought was dead when she got involved with vampires. A smile creeped across her face. A baby. She was having a baby. Only big problem right now, how to tell Kol.
Kol sat on the couch, bouncing his niece on his knee, watching his older brother play the piano. His other older brother sat in a chair, reading. Kol's thoughts consumed by Elena. He couldn't help but almost want her to be pregnant. Not that he'd ever admit it, he knew it was impossible. It wasn't worth holding out hope for. Hope giggled, interrupting his thoughts. This. This made him want one of his own. He'd settle for his niece being it for him though. He would be a horrible father. No matter what, he was still a monster. He knew though, Elena wanted a child. He loved her all the more for wanting him over her human dreams. Over being a mother. He was riddled with guilt but he couldn't help himself. He would never let her go now. She chose him. And it was too late to back out.
Footsteps approached. He could smell her before he saw her. He could sense her nerves. They were going haywire. What happened? When she appeared in the room, he stood with Hope, propping her on his hip. He walked over to Klaus and passed Hope over. He sat her on his lap then his fingers continued to dance across the keys. Elena's face clearly displayed her apprehension. She shrugged off her jacket and set down her purse.
"What happened?" She had psyched herself up for this the whole walk back. She took a deep breath. He stood directly in front of her.
"I— well— I— I'm pregnant." Kol froze. Piano ceased. Book forgotten. Elena looked down, her arms crossed holding herself. "The doctor said I was six weeks. No doubt." She glanced at Kol but he remained frozen. "Kol?" Nothing.
Elena looked to Klaus. Same reaction, frozen. Then Elijah, he was clearly deep in thought. Still shocked but not nearly as frozen. That's Elijah for you, always poised. Looking back at Kol, he still had yet to move. Yet to even blink.
"Kol, please say something. Anything. Please. I know it's crazy, but I promise you there's been no one else. Since I've been human, it's only been you. I would never want anyone else. Just please, say something." His eyes finally regained function and looked at Elena. He opened his mouth but nothing came out. He cleared his throat and tried again.
"We are going to be ok, darling. It's ok." He stepped forward and pulled her into his arms. She wrapped around him, relieved he didn't think she'd been unfaithful with a human. Relieved he wasn't upset or angry he was going to be a father. He just whispered comforting words into her ear. He hid his face from the other men in the room, burrowing his face in her hair, hiding the tears in his eyes.
I'm going to be a father.
