Dante's security team opened the car door for him to slip into the backseat, I watched sneakily. They took their positions in the front seats and the car pulled away, soon disappearing into the distance. It struck me then, why did Dante always insist on driving whenever we went out for lunch?
Mavis and I remained standing, my eyes transfixed by the sight of his vehicle disappearing into the distance while Mavis rambled on about her day, I finally snapped out of my trance and realized we needed to hail a cab.
I nervously bit my lip, knowing I had to tell Mavis about Dante's request. "Dante has asked me to accompany him on a three-day business trip out of town," I finally mustered up the courage to say. I closed my eyes tightly, bracing myself for her reaction.
"Tell me you said no?" Mavis hissed, her tone betraying her annoyance.
I hesitated, knowing how she felt about Dante. "Well, you see," I began, but before I could finish, Mavis cut me off with a loud groan of frustration. "Really, Faith?!" she exclaimed; her annoyance visible. She hailed a cab for both of us, her disappointment evident in her body language.
As the cab drove off and I told him where we were going, Mavis wasted no time in expressing her displeasure with my decision. "I'm completely flabbergasted that you even considered saying yes to his proposal after what he did to you," she spoke.
"And how on earth do you even plan to juggle your responsibilities as a mother of two?" Mavis continued, glaring at me.
"I can't believe you would even think about dropping everything to cater to your boss, especially after he's the one who put you in the hospital," she grumbled, making it very, very clear that she was disappointed in my decision to go on this trip.
Her words stung, and I couldn't help but feel guilty for even considering Dante's offer. I had always prided myself on being responsible and dependable, especially when it came to taking care of my babies.
But something about the prospect of accompanying Dante on a trip out of town had been tempting especially with the benefits it had to offer.
I looked out the window and watched the city pass by, I couldn't shake the feeling that I had let Mavis and the twins down. It was a sobering realization, one that made me question my priorities and the decisions I had made.
I explained my reasoning to Mavis, I felt a wave of sadness wash over me. "I was so focused on the prospect of earning triple my monthly salary and getting off probation that I convinced myself it was worth sacrificing my principles. I thought it would be good for my children to finally have what they wanted, not just what they needed to survive. And I couldn't bear the thought of being sent home," I said, my voice thick with emotion.
There's no worse feeling than seeing your children miss out on the good things in life because of financial hardship.
It broke my heart whenever I had to tell them that we couldn't afford ice cream on Sundays or to see their sad faces when I couldn't provide for them.
Mavis's eyes widened in shock as she processed what I had just said. "Wait, did you say triple the amount of pay for this month and taken off probation? Is that what the prick blackmailed you with?" she asked, her voice rising with anger.
I nodded my head, feeling ashamed for even considering Dante's offer.
"No wonder you agreed to it," Mavis sighed, her anger replaced with understanding. "He made a deal too good to pass up, and you were only thinking of your babies' well-being."
I felt a sense of relief wash over me as Mavis continued to speak. "Now I understand, I think you made the right decision. I mean, it's only three days, and the benefits for your babies in the end will be better. I guess I could also take care of my god babies while you're away," she smiled, her words offering me comfort and support.
Her words were like ice to my burning wound, and I felt a sense of gratitude for having a friend like her.
It was moments like these that reminded me of the importance of having a strong support system, especially during challenging times.
Once we stepped outside the car and headed inside my apartment, I was greeted by the familiar sights and sounds of my home.
The sound of cartoons playing on the television filled the room. My heart swelled with love as my twin babies, Ava and Aiden, ran towards me with open arms after hearing the door open.
"Mumma!" They yelled in unison, enveloping me in a warm embrace.
I hugged them tightly, feeling their small bodies pressed against mine. "How are my babies doing?" I asked, kissing their foreheads.
"Mumma, today was fun!" They exclaimed; their faces lit up with excitement.
Their infectious laughter filled the room, and I couldn't help but smile. They were my pride and joy, and I cherished every moment with them.
"I think I'll take my leave now." The twin's babysitter said to me.
"Thank you," I said, giving her a warm smile.
Once the babysitter made her way to the door, Mavis closed it behind her.
The air was filled with excitement as my two children heard the familiar voice of their godmother, affectionately known as Aunty May, exclaiming, "Guess who brought their favorite baby's candies!" Their faces lit up with delight and they raced towards her, eager to receive the sweet treats and affectionate kisses on their cheeks.
As they indulged in their candies, Mavis asked about their day and they eagerly chattered away, recounting every detail with enthusiasm.
Soon enough, they remembered the cartoons they had been watching in the living room before racing to climb into the sofa once again, contentedly snuggled up on the couch with their beloved godmother by their side.
Just as they were getting comfortable, Mavis, questioned me, "So when is this three-day business trip?" Mavis questioned her tone curious.
"Tomorrow," I sheepishly replied, feeling slightly guilty for springing the news on her at the last minute.
Mavis playfully glared at me before breaking into a smile, "So I suppose you had already planned for me to take care of the babies?" she quipped, her eyes twinkling with amusement. I let out a sigh of relief, grateful for her understanding and support.
I chuckled at her remark, knowing that Mavis was always up for taking care of my babies. "Of course, I couldn't think of anyone else who could take care of them like you do," I said buttering her up.
Mavis grinned, knowing that she was the best godmother a child could ask for. "You know it," she said getting up.
"I guess I'll get to my apartment and prepare myself for your departure and my stay with the twins." She spoke waving a goodbye before leaving.
I spent the rest of the evening playing with the twins trying to soak in as much of their company as possible. As the night wore on, I tucked my babies into bed, kissing them goodnight and reminding them of how much I loved them. Mavis stayed over, helping me prepare for the upcoming trip.
The next morning, I woke up early and got ready, saying goodbye to my babies. I had never gone a day without seeing them, and now I would go three whole days without them.
I hugged them tightly, tears streamed down my face, knowing that I would miss them terribly.
But I had made a promise to give them a better life, and I would do anything to keep that promise as I fought the urge to unpack my things and stay with my babies.
The next three days would be tough, but I knew that I had Mavis and my babies waiting for me back home.
I headed for the airport where I was suddenly met with Dante as we boarded a first-class plane together.
I could see that actual Faith appears determined to pair me up with Dante, I can't help but wonder what the next three days have in store for us.
