With an anxious rush of adrenaline, I hurriedly made my way through the bustling corridors, the faint echo of my footsteps echoing in the air. Time seemed to blur as I frantically reached out and skillfully stopped the elevator just in the nick of time.
And there, to my surprise, stood Dante, a figure of intrigue and magnetism as his blue eye taking me in. With a subtle, yet small smile gracing my lips, I couldn't help but greet him with a soft "good morning," the words dancing delicately on the tip of my tongue.
"Good morning, Faith," He gazed at me with an unrecognizable emotion.
As I stepped into the confined space of the elevator, a curious shiver ran down my spine, a sensation akin to being under the microscope of his piercing gaze.
Every nerve in my body tingled with a mixture of anticipation and fear, as if I were standing at the edge of a cliff and about to fall.
I silently prayed for the elevator's journey to be swift, hoping to escape the intensity of being in such close proximity to him once again, my thoughts haunted by the vivid memory of our stolen kiss.
Thankfully, the doors finally slid open, freeing us from our temporary confinement, and we commenced on our way to our office.
In that fleeting moment, my mind drifted, contemplating the curious choice Dante had made, opting to remain in his office rather than joining the others in the bustling lobby. The puzzle of his sole nature piqued my curiosity, leaving a lot of unanswered questions in my mind.
A relentless paranoia gripped me as I couldn't shake the feeling of Dante's watchful gaze upon me. The occasional stolen glances, once seemingly harmless, now carried an air of knowing, hinting at a secret he might hold close.
Seated at his imposing desk, Dante's presence loomed all the way over to my office space, his eyes a constant source of my discomfort. Their penetrating intensity made it difficult to focus, as if their very essence sought to unravel the layers of my being. With each passing moment, the peculiar unease grew even stronger within me.
Perplexingly, despite the company-wide celebration of "bring your kids to work" day, Dante seemed aloof and disinterested, displaying no care to engage with anyone, or their little ones. The disparity of his actions weighed heavily on my mind. Why have bring your kids to work day if you weren't going to engage with them?
Resolute, I found solace at my own desk, attempting to drown out the nagging remnants of a morning dream that lingered in the back of my thoughts.
The struggle to convince my babies to stay at home had left me disheveled, compounded by the disappointment etched across May's face as she yearned for this irregular family outing.
Yet, amidst the whirlwind of emotions, I resolved to remain focused on the tasks at hand, pushing forward and doing my work, even as the memory of that terrible dream tugged at my consciousness.
My heart would drop like a heavy stone each time I stepped outside, greeted by the vibrance of laughter and playful chatter from children reveling in the joys of being with their parents at work.
It was in those moments that a pang of guilt would echo within me, questioning my role as a mother. Was I being cruel by depriving Ava and Aiden of the chance to partake in the excitement of "bring your kids to work" day?
Ever since their tender beginnings, my precious babies had rarely experienced moments of true delight or adventure. Even though they were still young, their lives seemed to drift by, devoid of the innocent pleasures that other children their age so effortlessly embraced.
Ava and Aiden had remained confined to the confines of our little apartment with their babysitter, their world limited to the same old routines and occasional treats of ice cream every now and then when I can afford it—a meager break that hardly classified as a genuine source of enjoyment. Maybe when they start school soon it could be a little exciting for them.
