"That was it? You're gonna show up to some random persons house, tell him we may or may not have found whatever he is and then tell him you'll bring the kids over!? Hesterin's going to kill you. No, she's going to pull out your feathers one by one and then roast you alive." Griff huffed exaggeratedly, throwing his hands in the air. If there's one thing that can get him riled up enough to truly show his emotions, it's my idiotic actions. I guess that's why we make a good couple.
"It's only a little meeting, plus, I only said we'd bring them there, not that we'd leave them there. They'll be going back to the watchtower as soon as we know whether they're like him or not." I replied halfheartedly with a shrug. He sighed and took my small hand in his large one, keeping an eye out for anything suspicious as we walked. Hesterin was pacing in front of the watchtowers door, her gaze almost immediately finding us as soon as we left the tree line.
"Ryo said you found something." She began when she got close enough.
"I think I did, but that idiot mate of yours didn't think that maybe getting your hopes up was a bad idea." I grumbled, watching as she deflated.
"So it was a dead end?"
"Not really. I don't think so anyway. We have a meeting with someone who might be able to tell us what they are tomorrow at noon.""Callie."
"Hesterin."
"Cal."
"Hes."
"What did you do?"
"I simply agreed to bring the twins to his house. It's fine. I promise, and for everyone's safety your staying here. Griff and I will take the kiddos."
Her eyes immediately turned a dangerous coal black and she growled.
"They're not going anywhere without us."
"This is exactly why you have to stay behind! He made you lose control, I can't have you losing your mind over this. I get it, your usually the leader of our little group, but Hes, for once please let me handle things."There was a pregnant pause between the three of us as my best friend calmed herself down, her eyes slowly changing back to their normal color.
"Fine. But if they come back with one scratch, one scratch Callie, I will hunt this guy down."
"Sounds like a plan." I saluted her, knowing it annoyed the heck out of her, and trotted inside with a grin. The kids stayed in bed for the rest of the day, only showing themselves when we checked on them. I got up the next morning and made my way to their room, carrying two plates with pancakes, eggs and sausage. I quietly opened the door to Tristan's room to find both the twins sitting cross-legged, talking in their strange language with hushed voices.
"We moeten aan hun taal werken voor het geval we iets nodig hebben." Tristan whispered, tugging at his shirt sleeve.
"Hoe?" Alexia questioned curiously, her tiny nose scrunching in confusion.
"Weet je nog de armband die Loli je gaf? Ze zei dat het zou helpen." He answered, vaguely gesturing to a bracelet I'd noticed on the girls wrist.I blinked awkwardly and knocked to get their attention, and let me tell you, I've never seen a child's head whip around so fast.
"Um, I brought breakfast. We have to leave in a little while so can y'all get ready?" I asked, going over and setting their food on the bed between them. They shared a look before studying the food.
"Heeft ze ons eten gebracht?" Alexia inquired.
"Natuurlijk deed ze Lia, Loli zei dat degene die ons vond voor ons zou zorgen en ervoor zou zorgen dat we drie maaltijden per dag hadden."
"Het is raar..... begreep je nog iets anders dat ze zei?"
"Ik denk dat ze zei dat we ergens heen gingen, dus we moeten ons haasten."The hastily began eating -which made me think they got the gist of what I'd said, so they know a decent amount of English- and I let them be, making my way to the left wing library to catch up on some reading.
About thirty minutes later the twins walked in and gaped around the room, their eyes wide as they took in the scene before them.
"Can you guys understand me well enough?" I asked them, smiling at the joy on their faces.
Tristan shrugged and held his index finger roughly an inch away from his thumb.
"pieces." He replied shortly, his voice making it obvious he was very young."We're going to a friends house." I informed them, not sure if they understood as I got up from my seat.
"Friend?" Tristan muttered confusedly, which earned and whispered response from his sister.
""Vriend. Onthoud."
"Ja."
I nodded awkwardly and took their hands gently before making my way out to start the walk to Damian's house.I lightly kicked the door, not wanting to give the kids a chance to take off -though I doubted one would leave without the other- and we waited patiently for Damian to open the door.
"Well good morning to you too." He grumbled sarcastically to me before his eyes fell on the twins, widening to the size of saucers.
"I thought there was only one."
"You never asked. They're twins." I answered bluntly, waiting for him to step aside.
"How old are they? Four? Five?"
"Two."
"Two!? Where did you find them? I aught to have a chat with some people." He grumbled, moving out of the doorway and allowing us to step in."I'm the middle of the woods being chased by some hunters my group had run into a couple weeks ago- more or less." I tried to be vague, I didn't know him. I didn't know if I could actually trust him or not yet.
"This is ridiculous." He muttered, rubbing a hand down his face.
"Tell me about it. Anyway, what do you think?"
"Still hard to tell." He mumbled, squatting in front of them and giving them a wide grin."You said they had wings?" He questioned
"Mhm." He turned his gaze back to the twins.
"Can I see your wings?" He asked, earning a weird look from the children.
"Wat wil hij?" Lia whispered not so softly to her brother.
"Eh, ik denk dat hij onze vleugels wil zien. Het woord klinkt bekend in de oren, zoals uit Loli's lessen." Tristan replied, oblivious to the bewildered look on the man's face.
"Je zou het moeten vragen." "Goed. Bedoel je vleugels?""Right, forgot to warn you. They're the smartest kids I've ever seen. They can speak what sounds to be fluent whatever that is but barely any English. Any idea what they're saying?" Damian stared at me and shrugged his shoulders, shocked.
"Maybe if I show them..." he trailed off as pitch black wings unfurled from his back and spread out in front of our eyes.
"WE ZIJN VERGELIJKBAAR!" The twins shouted, immediately unfurling their tiny brown wings with excited grins.A/N this story definitely isn't as popular as some others on my page, oof, but I'm actually enjoying writing it and figuring out every little detail about my characters and plots. I hope this is ok Reclaim_the_Rainbow
