When I was a child, there were dragons.

Everywhere you looked you would see the scales of a dragon shining in the sunlight. Or hear the beating of strong wings as a dragon flew past your ship.

However, many people harbored a deep hatred for these creatures, hatred created by a large sense of fear. Because of this many vikings were known for their epic dragon battle stories. It was kill or be killed for many of these vikings.

Though few of us souls saw the dragons as what they really were: gentle, loving, intelligent creatures capable of the strongest loyalties. Unfortunately, that wasn't a very popular opinion.

Where I come from dragons were treated as equals, companions. They helped us in ways we may never fully repay. In fact I owe my life to my dragon, Atlas. She saved me one day all those years ago, when my world suddenly changed forever.

On a small island seemingly in the middle of nowhere, there was a small but mighty tribe. For what they lacked in numbers they made up for in wings and scales. Dragons and humans coexisted on this island. Though it does not appear on any maps. For the people who live there keep their secrets close and way of life hidden.

However, that same secrecy and protection would ultimately lead to their downfall. As they had no allies and no way of calling for help...

The moon was bright in the starry sky, illuminating the grass as a young girl with wild h/c hair ran through the meadow. Jumping along chasing her was an equally young dragon, a stormcutter, with four wings slightly too large for her body. Atlas's dark scales shimmered like the night sky above the two as they frolicked at that twilight hour.

"Come on, Ata! Come on!" the young girl calls as she giggles and dashes deeper into the meadow, farther away from the glowing lamps of the village. The young dragon chitters with excitement as she chases the young girl.

Fireflies sprung up from the grass as the two ran. The three year old giggled as the bugs floated around like fallen stars. It was like the night sky had descended to embrace them. Oh how the young girl wished to be in the sky with the dragons, but she was far too young to begin riding. Though her parents promised to begin training her in two years, one if she's lucky.

As the fireflies disperse into the sky, the two continue to play in the meadow. Atlas pounces on the young human, causing the girl to shriek with laughter as they roll around in the grass. The young girl pushes the small dragon off her and dashes behind a nearby rock to hide. Atlas, not realizing the three year old ran off, sits up and looks around for the girl.

The h/c haired child giggles softly to herself as she tries to sneak up on her best friend. However, Atlas turns her head around near 180, spotting the sneaking child. The dragon yips happily before the child laughs and turns to run toward the forest bordering the meadow.
