Drunk as he was, it was enough to grab hold of him tightly- but Akira didn't want to let go anyways.
He'd let Alani in briefly once he saw her face, she was crying. She sat at his desk chair after taking off her shoes, sniffling.
"I hadn't seen him in so long and after all this time...." she started, a hiccup interrupting her as she trailed off. He had no idea what she expected from him.
The reason why Kai didn't talk to his parents was because of her. Akira didn't see it all but he heard from Kai in the time being his roommate. One day at their high school, this racist guy kept bothering Alani and making terrible jokes about her appearance, he bullied her endlessly because of her english pronunciation, which she couldn't help for a while since she'd started learning english way later on than Akira. It got really bad, he'd cornered her in a classroom to actually beat her up. Kai attended the same school, but he was only in school on paper, he said he was skipping most of his classes to go to the other side of town to- get this- he said it with a laugh too, do escorts for money to fund his band.
He'd been in school for once that day, the classes were mostly empty because it was the end of the term. He said that he only found them because he was heading over to Alani's classroom to ask her for money. The guy almost got his way with his fists before Kai interrupted with a paper scissors, stabbing him in his throat. He said he didn't stop with one because he'd heard the guy say something really fucked up, so he went wild. There was an entire case against him (the guy survived), and Akira vividly remembered the disruption it caused in their family. But the real problem was that Alani, being the only witness had testified against him. He was supposed to graduate that year.
That's how he landed himself almost 2 years in jail, only getting bailed out towards the end because his father sent his final mercy to him. He doubted Alani ever defended him in any way to his parents, the pressure over time maybe making it even harder to change her mind. It wasn't hard to figure out why she'd done that- it was just so her. She didn't like violence in any form, and Kai's violence was on a whole other level, it was too much for her. Akira didn't care, he respected Kai for that one. Her personality had been that way for almost forever since they were little because her parents coddled her. They didn't keep her away from the world, she chose to stay in her little bubble because she liked it there.
He studied her hurt face now with a furrowed expression. He didn't mind joining her with the tears just then, he too had heard some shit today.
"He said I was fucking pain in the ass" she whimpered, the curse leaving her mouth, even if it was quoted, catching Akira off guard. The raven scoffed, that was all?
"You're gonna get me in trouble, stop looking for him" Akira grunted, looking at the floor in fatigue.
"Both of you guys- what happened Akira? What do you mean I'm going to get you in trouble?"
Akira groaned, not wanting to tell her, "It's nothing to do with you"
"It doesn't matter, what happened between you guys, tell me, you guys were fine before you came to this place. You were the only person he talked to after getting released-"
"Because-" Akira interrupted aggressively, "He's an asshole that likes to use people. He only talked to me so I could do his bidding- all of his fucking assignments, loan him money, do his dirty work. God, I can't believe you want to play sister to him again after all this time. He's gone, Alani, you never knew him"
"He what?" she asked, sitting up and peering at him in shock through her red-rimmed eyes.
Akira's expression turned dark, remembering his earlier threat.
