He managed to dodge Fritz the week after because he had a family emergency and was gone then, but for the next 2 weeks before the game, he bugged the hell out of Kayden. He sent him excuses and told him to focus on their game on Saturday. Which he had a point, there was no time for whatever this was. At least that's what he'd been telling himself. But he caught him anyways, the Thursday before.
"Where are you guys going?" Zachery called after them.
"It's Trippy Thursday, we're going to buy drugs" Fritz responded sarcastically.
"We have Trippy Thursdays?" they heard him ask himself before they exited outside the gym.
"Seriously, what do you see in him" Kayden muttered, to himself, but Fritz heard and that was his first slip-up.
"He has his charms- but let's not talk about me-"
"And let's not talk about me either"
"So then who do we talk about?"
"Neither, we were sent on a mission to request new shoe-"
"Then let's talk about your boyfriend then"
"He's not my-" Kayden caught himself suddenly, realizing what he had just indirectly confirmed.
"So it was about a boy"
"Fritz" Kayden growled, resisting the urge to run his face into the wall they were walking near.
"Alright, okay, I thought we'd gotten closer," he said laughing, "I forgot who you were"
Even though he said that, giving off the impression that he wouldn't press further, the time that he remained silent for was limited to until they'd done their business and were walking back.
"What's he like?"
"Since when did coming out to me mean you could just pry into my life?"
"Sin~ce," he said playfully, ignoring Kayden's venom, "I know you. Talk to me about it. Otherwise, you'll end up doing something Kayden-like"
"Talk to you about what? And what's something Kayden-like?"
"Something like smacking the guy"
Been there, done that, Kayden thought. The start of their relationship was the roughest it could possibly get when meeting a new person. It made his head hurt when he thought about their brief history that was speckled with blotches, mostly made by Kayden. But words were hard enough on their own to take back.
"Did you confess to him?"
"No-" Kayden bit, stopping in his walk, "I'm not like you- It's...." he trailed off, unsure what he was going to say exactly.
"Kayden. You know I'm not asking to tease you right? I for one know how difficult it is, this whole thing is even worse on your own"
"I'm pretty sure he hates me, I have no intention of taking it anywhere. You don't have to confess to every person you like" he argued back, feeling cornered.
"But every person you don't is a miss"
"Who cares if it's a miss, I can't just suddenly turn around my entire life, it's a one-time thing"
"So you're scared of the people around you, is that all?"
He said it like it was just a minor inconvenience as if they weren't going to be public faces soon. He'd already decided that those feelings were staying where they were- in his heart- forever. There was no point because his life was just too different, Fritz was right, this wasn't exactly the most welcoming industry. But even more than that- the real reason that there was no point, why would Akira like him? He acknowledged that he'd been maybe a little rude and malevolent, that it was probably too late anyways. He'd reject himself before he could hear it from Akira.
