Chapter 20 - Rat

[Cat's POV]

Leo.

Why is Leo here?

There is only one explanation for he could be here alive.

But that would mean...

"I can tell you understand what I meant now, Caterina," Tony says, pleased with himself.

I ignore him, staring right into my brother-in-law's face. My body goes completely blank, frozen in time as I stare at the now-stranger across from me.

I don't know this person is. Not anymore. Nothing about him seems familiar at all now.

All I see in front of me is a dead snake.

"Why?" Is the only thing I can think to ask, or to say at all.

Leo blinks slowly. His face doesn't seem affected by my words or by seeing me at all. Especially like this.

"Are you surprised, Caterina?" Tony asks, stepping closer in the corner of my eye.

Everything in me lunges forward at once, but the chair restraints don't let me get far. I bare my teeth at the rotten trash across from me.

"You piece of shit!" I scream, struggling against my restraints to get out of this godforsaken chair and kill him right here and now.

He doesn't do as much as flinch, which just makes me fight harder.

"You would betray your own brother? The one who loves you more than anyone?" I yell and then give up against my restraints, spitting as far as I can in his direction. "After all he has done for you... disgusting."

He stays silent. Still. It infuriates me more than anything. Does he feel nothing for Enzo? For me? For Eva?

Eva...

"Eva is pregnant! Does she know?"

That makes him step forward. "No. Now shut up."

I don't know him.
I don't know this person.
I don't know him at all.

I can't think of anything else.

"You're a fucking rat," I spit at him. "A two faced rat. You make me sick."

He looks off to the side.

"Shut up, Cat," he says tightly again and if I wasn't tied down I know in this instant I would tear his tongue from his mouth. My whole body is shaking.

"Look at me," I tell him as calmly as I can and he blinks again. "Look at me!" I scream and he finally meets my eye.

I take a deep breath, going completely still.

"I'm going to fucking kill you. I promise you that."

He stares at me, his lips parting slightly. Is he afraid? He should be.

"Let's go," Tony says and comes into my view. He presses his hand on Leo's back, turning them back toward the door.

"I will kill you," I say quietly just before the door closes and by the way Leo stops in his tracks, I know he heard me.

The door shuts fully and once again I am alone in the darkness. It becomes so quiet, it feels like the black silence is threatening to swallow me whole. My chest tightens hard and my stomach clenches. If I could physically double over, I would.

A scream I have never heard before escapes my throat. A loud, carnel sound that spooks even myself.

My stomach clenches again but this time feels different. Sharper. Like a knife in my gut.
