Enzo is back home twenty minutes after Salvatore finally leaves. Anthony and I stand across from Enzo's desk where he is seated on the other side, his head in his hands."What does he want?" I ask him for the second time, getting a sigh the first time insufficiently.
But it's Anthony who replies this time. "He stalled the war years ago. While you were gone, he pushed for it instead. Gave us a timeline to get you back before he intervened. A month."
"Why would he care?"
"He said it looked weak," Enzo finally speaks and looks up to me and me alone, as if Anthony is not here anymore or never was. "I was too in my head to think past it. I had to get you back before he went after Tony and got you killed."
"So he suddenly changed his mind because I was taken?" I push, trying to avoid the urge to look at my feet. I stare at his collar instead.
"He has certainly benefited from the Cillamoni territory being split up," Anthony adds beside me.
"Then why care about us? Now, especially. We never made a move on that territory since it happened." Or so I know of.
"I'll find out when I get his message," Enzo answers, too calmly.
My shoulders straighten. "There is no message. Coming here was a test. He wanted to see our security."
"We increase it immediately," Anthony says.
"Agreed." Enzo nods to him.
This isn't good enough.
I take a step forward, placing my hands against the back of the chair in front of me. "Enzo, he mentioned our son."
His eyes darken as he looks into mine. "He comes near here again, he dies."
"We need to do more than that. He needs to go. Now." Why isn't he suggesting this? Why did I even need to?
His jaw ticks. "It's not that simple."
It might be hard, but it isn't impossible. We will figure it out. I will figure it out. This is our safety - our son's safety - in question. I don't care if he leads the five families or the country, I will not let him live when every breath threatens my son. I won't.
"I've taken down worse," I remind my husband and he looks down before looking back to me. I know his answer.
"Cat-" he starts but I shake my head and turn away.
"I'm going to see Stef. Send word to Zach when Ace arrives."
Enzo's voice rings out as I place my hand on the handle. "He will not touch our boy."
I pause, taking a deep breath. My head turns to the side.
"Do not promise those things again."
For a long second, everything is silent. I find myself unable to move in the nothingness, frozen in place, my rage threatening to boil over if I-
"I will send word, Cat."
Anthony's voice brings me back. Just enough that I take a breath and nod towards the door before opening it.
"Thank you," I reply as I leave the room and shut the door behind me.
- - -
"We kill him."
I click my tongue and stare at the ceiling, my feet crossed up on my office desk in the basement.
"Not an option." I frown. "Yet."
