I check the bedroom door is locked three times before I press the call button, and even then I watch the door from the window in the dark.My heart races as my phone rings against my ear.
On the third ring he picks up.
"I knew you would call," he says in a silked-tone revolting tone.
"Me for him," I say instantly.
Tony inhales. "And why would I do that, my dear Cat?"
"Because you know it means more to him."
"Than his child? His son?" He says in a faux-shocked voice.
"At face value, no," I agree and take a deep breath. "But there is a line to which you can't touch him psychologically with a child. We both know I am the better target."
He says nothing for a few seconds. I listen to his breath. I can almost hear him thinking.
Then he clicks his tongue and I know the answer.
- - -
"Caterina, what are we doing?" Ace says as he flies down the road following the GPS location I set. He taps against the wheel with his middle finger unevenly, nervous.
"I'm getting my son back," I tell him, staring forward.
"How?" He says more forcefully. "What about Enzo's plan?"
I don't know the exact plan, but I know the result.
"His plan gets everyone killed - including Stef. Including him."
"So what is your plan?" He asks in a way that tells me that he already knows the answer... and doesn't like it.
But to pass the time as my hands shake, I tell him anyways.
"He never wanted our boy. He was an easy target to get our attention. To cause chaos." I shake my head, looking out the window. "No. What he really wants is me."
No matter what Tony said, or says, I know that is the truth. What would he have done with Stef?
...What will he do to me?
"He wants Enzo destroyed," Ace says from behind my head as I watch the red car lights pass by.
"Yes. But he has always done it through me. He could take Enzo out any day of the week. He doesn't. He wants to torture him. It's fun for him."
It's silent for a minute, then Ace speaks with more emotion and sincerity than I have ever heard from him in the years of working for me.
"Don't do this."
I inhale and exhale slowly, silently. Then I turn in my seat to face him and put my Donna face on.
"You are going to take Stef back to the house and make sure they don't do anything."
His grip tightens on the wheel as he shakes his head.
"Cat. No."
"You will do this!" I yell into the small space between us. I don't have time to argue with him or convince him. I chose him to do this because I trusted he would. "Take him back to Enzo and convince whoever you have to convince not to do a single thing until I return."
"You know what doing this means," he says and I stare at the side of his head.
"I know." I sigh. "But he's my son."
"Let me go. I'll take Stef's place."
I stare at his handsome face and try not to let my emotions get the better of me. I have to be strong right now. I have to do what I have to do. I can't let anyone stop me now...
