AlternateEnding to hand-holding scene(page 396 and 397) in Book 4

Lockwood motioned with his head, and without looking, his fingers stole out and gripped mine.

A blackbird in the tree behind us let out a sudden song, loud and sad. It fell silent. Lockwood and I stood transfixed at the top of the bank.

Then I realized he was still holding my hand.

He realized it at the same instant. Our fingers let loose and fell back to our work belts. I turned to walk away but then suddenly Lockwood grabbed my hand and gripped it tighter than before. He pulled me close to him until our faces were less than a centimeter away from each other.

'I don't want to fight this anymore Luce. I love you.' And before I could even think of what he said, his lips met mine. I forgot everything for a moment, the Creeping Shadow, that I had a whole village to rid of ghosts. I could just feel the touch of Lockwood's lips on mine and the feel of his slender arms around me.

I pulled away. 'Lockwood. We have to go.' I whispered. His face was flushed and bright red. 'Yeah. We do.' He responded.
