Chapter Six: You Live In A Single Moment, I Live In A Thousand
In the beginning, Alina heard birds chirping and smelled fresh grass. She opened her eyes and there was an infinite blue sky above her, not a single cloud in sight. She slowly came to her senses and realized she was lying on the ground in a field full of blooming flowers, the aroma of freshly grown nature filling her nostrils. Then another sound differentiated itself from the birds and the winds and the bees – a sniffling crying sound. Alina sat up slowly. The colorful flowers and the lush grass were so overgrown she barely could see anything without standing, but she saw a big wooden windmill, its wings spinning lazily, their whooshing barely audible.
She stood up and the little jewels in her dress glittered in the bright sunlight – she noticed she was wearing a beautiful white dress, similar to those women in the East wear on their wedding day. She grabbed the fabric with her fingers and pulled the dress up to walk through the grass with more ease on her bare feet.
She spotted a river near the mill and a small dark figure on the bank. As she got closer, she noticed that the figure was a boy, his shoulders shaking with sobs. She started walking faster, the flowers leaning to the sides to let her pass, and still, it seemed to take forever. After one moment, after eternity, she touched the boy's shoulder.
"Hey..." she whispered. The boy tensed. "Don't cry..."
He turned, black eyes boring into her. He couldn't have been more than twelve.
He seemed shocked to see her. He looked her up and down and she realized how ridiculous she must be looking.
"Who are you?" he asked, his voice timid.
She looked at the river, then back at him. "I'm Alina. May I sit?" she gestured to the ground next to him. The boy nodded and she sat down.
The boy stopped crying, watching her curiously. The mill spun around twice before she asked, "Do you live here?"
The boy shook his head. "I live close by, but I always come here when I feel bad. I love it here because it's so sunny all the time—I love the sun. But... I've never met anyone else here..."
Alina looked at his honest face, "Do you still feel sad?" she asked.
Rather than answering, he kept on studying her with his perceptive eyes. "You're like me, aren't you?" he asked finally. "You're Grisha?"
Alina clutched her dress with her hands nervously. She never liked talking about being Grisha... All the terrible memories started coming back...
She smiled at the boy because he wasn't sad anymore and she didn't want to break the spell. "Yes, I am Grisha."
The boy huffed and turned from her to stare ahead. "I hate being Grisha. I wish I was born normal."
"But being Grisha is so much better than being normal... It's a blessing from the gods..." Alina countered, for the first time believing those words.
