Alina stayed next to Nikolai's bed all throughout the next five days. He woke up early on the fifth morning, feverish. He did not recognize her and spoke complete nonsense. Alina didn't know how to help – her powers were not it – but she still summoned light, hoping that would help keep his fever down. Luckily, it did. She kept the sun in her hands close to Nikolai's heart, spending hours upon hours watching his face gain color. At some point Tatiana came to see her son, she spoke no words to Alina, and Alina did not turn back to look at her mother-in-law.

It was already dark outside when Nikolai's eyes opened, clear for once. Alina brought her sunlight down, watching Nikolai swallow heavily.

"Alina?" he whispered hoarsely.

She caressed his cheek, smiling softly with teary eyes, "Hey, it's me."

He tried sitting up, but she stopped him, "What happened?" he asked, confused.

"You were attacked," Alina answered quietly, without realizing she was repeating the same words Kirigan had told her.

Recollection crossed his features, "Vasily..."

"Yes..." Although she didn't believe that to be true.

When Nikolai felt better and could sit up, she made sure he was brought hot soup to eat. He kept asking her questions about how everything went down, but she had nothing real to say, so she just told him, "Kirigan saved you and brought you back home. You were badly hurt in the head and chest. I've spent all night and day by your side, healing you with my light – I think you look a lot better now."

She spoke a lot, but nothing of truth. Because she didn't know anything. Because every single thing she was told seemed doubtful. But what could she say? That she suspected Kirigan to be behind all of this because he wanted to take the throne – and her with it, too? Nikolai wouldn't believe that. He trusted Kirigan more than anyone, more than her, even.

So she told him what she wanted to hear, what he needed to hear, afraid that otherwise it would put him even under more stress.

A few hours later, Nikolai fell back asleep and Tatiana promised to keep an eye on him while Alina went out to bathe and eat – the things she hadn't done properly in almost a week. After washing herself, she put on an earth-toned dress, simple enough to wear whenever there was no need for kefta. She was walking down the corridors back to Nikolai when she noticed a black figure looming at the door.

"You can't go in there," Alina stated firmly.

Kirigan turned his head to her, raising his eyebrows slightly. "And why is that?"

"Because I command you to stay back."

He turned a step back from the door, a shadow of a smirk playing on his lips, while Alina positioned herself in front of him to shield the door with her body – as of that would help.
