Chapter Ten: Is That It Makes Us Weak
For the next two and a half months, everything seemed to be the same, and since Aleksander wasn't treating her any better, Alina felt sure Healer Anya wasn't reporting back to him whatever she was saying during her treatment meetings.
"I feel like he doesn't even like me," Alina spoke up during one of those meetings when she and the Healer were walking around the gardens. "Why would he go through all of that just to ignore me? Why would he commit such crimes to get me if he doesn't even like me?" she pondered out loud, lost in thought.
Even though her questions were rhetorical, the Healer still answered, "I can assure you, Your Grace, he likes you. Firstly, he is your mate, so it's quite literally impossible for him not to like you. Secondly, he cares about you deeply. After all, he was the one who asked me to care for you. and it's helping, isn't it? He may be unable to speak the words, but you are important to him?"
"Do you ever... talk to him about me?"
The Healer blinked, "As I said, whatever you tell me is only between the two of us."
Alina stared at her hands, "No, I know, but does he ever... ask about me?"
"Oh, yes. But usually, he asks more abstract things. More often than not he asks me if you look healthy to me, or do I think you're getting better, or am I seeing any signs of distress in your face – something like that. He never asks any specifics about our conversations, and I wouldn't tell him even if he did."
"He literally could ask me all of these things himself," Alina groaned.
Healer Anya smiled, "Yes, he could."
Alina stared at the lush greenery they were now passing by. "Well then, if he's so afraid of talking to me, then you can go ahead and tell me it's pissing me off. You can also let him know that if he keeps ignoring me, I will literally jump out the window and run away."
The Healer seemed to be amused, "As you say, Your Grace."

That did it. Aleksander now insisted for them to have dinner every night in the small dining hall on the second floor, just the two of them, where the table was a lot smaller, so when they sat at the ends of it facing one another, it didn't seem like there were miles upon miles between them, only a few feet.
Since there were no one to serve them, per Alina's request, they had to do it themselves. But Aleksander insisted upon filling her place himself first, and only the his own – however hard he tried to resist it, the Alpha in him must've been taking a lead.
Normally, they ate in silence because they had nothing to talk about, because all the topics they could be discussing would mean they would either have to address what they were to one another, or they would be forced to vocalize their fears and anxieties concerning the other, which neither of them felt ready to do.
