Otto Apocalypse is a man with little regret. As such, it was rare for him to consider how things could've been different—how he could've made things different.
There was but one regret. That regret is you, his childhood friend. Ultimately, it was a few words that should not have been said that tore the two of you apart. While he supported the idea of bringing Kallen back, you did not. The first time you told him, he was surprised because you've always supported him. Never have you discouraged him. As a result, the two of you were constantly arguing over whether or not he should continue with his plans. These arguments never last long, but the last one. It was different from all the rest.
"Do you not wish for Kallen to live? Is that it?"
You have always supported him so why were you against him now?
"I would give anything for that day to end differently. You know that as well as I." You looked at him, pleading with him to listen. "That isn't why I'm against your plans."
"What other reason could you possibly have?" Otto doesn't let you explain. Not before he had his say. "And you call yourself her friend—my friend."
It wasn't fair. Otto knew that but he still said it. He watched how your eyes widened, how hurt you were by his words. The look of defeat that crossed your face right after made his heart clench tightly. The man chose not to retract his words leaving you to believe they were sincere. You left without even looking at him. He doesn't stop you. The door shuts quietly behind you.
On the first day, you don't show up for work. This does not come as a surprise to Otto. He does not comment on your absence nor does he send Amber for you.
On the second day, Amber inquires about your absence. Otto had no explanation for her.
The third day was much like the first and second days. At this point, he was getting worried. Still, he chose not to seek you out, telling himself that you needed more time.
The fourth day was pretty much the same.
On the fifth day, Otto musters the courage to go see you, only to find an empty room.
There was a sheet of paper sitting on the dresser. It was a letter of resignation with your signature on it. The blonde-haired male felt a sense of loss when he saw the paper. He was hit with a sudden realization that his actions just cost him his best friend. The Overseer immediately called for Amber.
Despite his best efforts, he was unable to locate you. It was like you disappeared. Eventually, he stopped looking. Otto believed that this would be the last he saw of you. Who would have thought that he'd meet you again, years later, and married no less?
"Joachim, you should be resting right now." The silver band wrapped around your finger seemed to mock him, reminding him of his loss. "I could've attended the meeting in your place."
You haven't noticed him as you were too busy fussing over the Sovereign of Anti-Entropy, the same man who bore the same wedding band as you.
"I know you could." He heard Welt reply. "It's just..."
"Just what? Hmm?" It was then that you noticed the man sitting across from your husband. Your eyes widened in recognition. "Otto. It's you."
The two friends were finally reunited.
...
The two of you had known each other since childhood. You were his greatest supporter, second to Kallen (for obvious reasons). It was his father who introduced you to him.
