if it were not you
i wouldn't remember those hours with longing instead of terror

if it were not you
i would worry than one day your fists would turn against me
i would be tight with dread at thought that you could pin me down and stop my bloodflow without breaking a sweat

if it were not you
i would watch you fight
see the bruises decorate your skin
hear the snap of your opponent's elbow under your carefully placed weight
and i would fear that this aggression would spill out into me

oh but
it is you

you tuck the blanket around me and then uncover the half of your body i do not lie on

you tell me you like it and it's hot and you're proud of me for standing up for myself

you don't want me to walk closest to the street in case a car swerves out of its lane and into us

you teach me how to choke a man most effectively and you want me to learn how to fight as well

you pin me down, hand around my throat, teeth against my ear to let me hear your panting as you consume me whole

but you hold my hand as you do so
