Once we had made it back to the top of the cliff, I knew we were in trouble. We were still miles away from civilization, and Jake's arm was badly injured. We needed help, and fast.
I suggested that I hike further to see if I could get a signal on my phone to call for help. But Jake was hesitant. He had been hired to protect me, and he didn't want me to leave his sight.
"I can't let you go alone, Natalie. It's too dangerous," he said firmly.
"I know, Jake. But we don't have any other options. We need to get help, and I'm the only one who can do it," I replied.
Jake looked at me, his eyes filled with worry. He knew I was right, but he also knew the risks.
"Promise me you'll be careful," he said, his voice barely above a whisper.
"I promise," I said, squeezing his good hand.
With that, I set out on the hike. The terrain was rough, and I had to climb over boulders and navigate through thick brush. But I was determined to get help for Jake.
After what felt like hours, I finally reached a spot where my phone had service. I quickly dialed emergency services and explained our situation. They said they would send a rescue team as soon as possible.
But I wasn't done yet. I knew I had to get back to Jake as soon as I could. I retraced my steps, moving as fast as I could.
When I finally reached the top of the cliff again, I could see that Jake was in even worse shape. His face was pale, and his breathing was labored.
"Help is coming, Jake. They're on their way," I said, sitting down next to him.
He looked at me, his eyes filled with gratitude. "Thank you, Natalie. You're so brave," he said, his voice barely above a whisper.
We sat there in silence, waiting for the rescue team to arrive. I could see the pain etched on Jake's face, but he didn't complain. He just sat there, holding my hand and waiting for help to come.
Finally, we heard the sound of helicopters in the distance. The rescue team had arrived. They airlifted us off the mountain and took us to the hospital.
