As soon as we had made it to the upstairs landing, I knew that something was amiss. For starters, all of the doors were closed. I figured that Slash and Liz had done this to perhaps try and slow us down. After all, if all of the doors were closed, we'd have to look behind each and every one just to find the two of them. But that wasn't all. Somewhere, far off in the distance, I could hear some low moans of sexual pleasure. I guessed I wasn't the only one who heard it, because Steven immediately froze once he reached me.
"Sounds like somebody scored," Steven murmured, his eye brows raising as though he was impressed.
I glared at him before turning to see Axl still hobbling up the stairs, Catherine sitting on his shoulders, playfully tugging at his hair. Thank god Catherine hadn't heard it yet.
"Axl!" I shouted, immediately catching his attention. He halted on the stairs and gazed up at me expectantly. "Take Catherine back downstairs with Duff and Izzy, please."
His eye brows furrowed in confusion. "What? Why?"
Great. Here I'd thought that Axl was a capable adult, and yet here he was, questioning me. I shot him a warning look.
"Because I said so."
"But, momma!" Catherine whined. "We have to find Liz and Uncle Slash!"
Why was everybody questioning me today? I know she's my child, but I found it really difficult not to roll my eyes and use sarcasm.
"We will, honey. Momma just needs to scope out the area with Uncle Stevie. We have to make sure there aren't monsters up here too. Okay?"
Catherine gave me a skeptical look, not seeming to buy the whole "monster hunt" thing. Steven quickly jumped in to save the day.
"In fact, I think I hear some right now..." He said, staring off down the hallway ominously. Sure enough, a loud grunt could be heard as well as the shriek of a woman. To my dismay, she sounded more happy than tortured. Still, Catherine didn't seem to notice the difference.
Catherine gasped in fright before patting Axl's head excitedly. "Did you hear that Wassle? Go, go, go!"
Axl nodded, his eyes widening in mock fear. I guessed that, after hearing the sounds in the hall, he had finally picked up on why I'd wanted them to go back downstairs. He turned tail and fled down the stairs, screaming in terror as he went. Over his screams, I could hear Catherine laughing hysterically. At least she was having fun and these fake monsters weren't traumatizing her.
As they left, I turned to Steven with a questioning look. " 'Wassle'?"
"She found out his name is W. Axl Rose. She wanted to call him 'Waxl', but obviously, it doesn't come out right," Steven answered with a chuckle.
I nodded in understanding, a smirk playing on my lips at how adorable my daughter was. The smile slowly faded when my thoughts returned to the task at hand. The moans had reached a whole new level, and it was all I could hear as I journeyed further down the hall, opening up doors as I went.
"They're really going at it, huh?" Steven commented, following me with an amused smile on his face and his hands stuffed into his pockets.
"I'd rather not talk about this with you," I replied, peeking my head into an empty bedroom before continuing on.
"Why's that? It's just sex."
That word...sex. It made my ears perk and my heart leap. It stopped me in my tracks, causing Steven to crash into me. As he collided into me, I tumbled to the floor, as my face hit the carpet, memories flooded through, playing out like a movie before my eyes.
