Space jump tech is still developing, and humanity is currently limited to intragalactic exploration. A ship's crew gets stranded in the future and have to explore the galaxy to piece together how to get home.
Some time later, I'm finally able to open my eyes. I'm dizzy as shit, but I'm still alive. I'm alive. This is a good start. OW!
"OW!" I shout both out loud and in my head as I reel from the pain in my arm. I go to sit up and the dizziness hits me, sending me back to the bed with a thump.
"Please, you need to rest, Kay. You lost a lot of blood, really quickly." A nurse comes over and pushes me back down when I try to sit up again. "Besides, you're still dizzy. I'm surprised you overcame the sedatives and woke up."
"Why does it feel like I got hit by a train?" I say, laying back down. I move my arm up to my head and am surprised when I feel cloth hit my head as well as a LOT more pain. "YOW!!!!!" I scream as I look at my arm.
Yeah. My right arm, just below my elbow, is just... gone. Non-existent. Nowhere to be seen. Poof.
"Uh... wha... what... happ... uhhhhh." I pass out again before I finish speaking.
I wake up again later and the pain is less than before, but still there. I'm now in my room in bed. "Wha..?"
Suddenly I hear a crash from the living room and lots of footsteps as the others come rushing into the room. Misaki is first to the bed. "Hon, are you okay?"
I look at her, then down at my non-existent arm, then back to her. "Well, I've been better." She smiles as Annabelle is next to the bed. "Kay, I'm sorry... We weren't able to recover your arm. I think it got lost in Misaki's destruction of the salvage yard's wall." She side-eyes Misaki who just shrugs.
Kazumi is last to the bed. "Well, we saved the majority of her. That's tha most important part." She gets grunts from everyone else. Misaki gently puts her hand on my shoulder and looks at me. "Looks like we're gonna have to get you a prosthetic." Annabelle gets this blank look on her face. "Uh, I don't know if we have any of those here. We would have to build one." Misaki facepalms while Annabelle keeps talking. "And I'm not sure who is skilled enough to build one..." Annabelle stops talking as all three of them look at me. "...other than Kaylin."
I sigh. "Yeah, I've built one before, but I never tested it to see if it worked. Plus, it would need to be wired and then eventually..." I wince. "...connected to my nerves." The others wince as well, then Annabelle speaks up. "Well, I'm sure that one of the doctors could work on that part if you can walk someone through the building process." I sigh again. "Yeah, well don't we have more important things to do? Like finding the last Plasma Conductor?"
Misaki sighs this time. "About that. Only one of the three actually work. That was the one we got from the storeroom on Mars. The other two are mechanically sound, but just... don't work." Kazumi shrugs, then points at my arm. "Yea, and til we get you back to full power, we don't have enough... hands to repair the broken ones." I look at her.
"You were waiting to hit me with that one, huh?" Kazumi smiles and nods. We all laugh.
