The sound of metal sliding on metal echoes throughout the room as Saber drew his sword from its scabbard. Sliding my dagger out of its sheath, Saber and I stood facing each other.
"You both understand the rules?" the king asked, standing between us.
"Yes." Saber answered. The king looked over to me. I nodded my head in understanding.
"Good." Caesar said, turning around and walked back to his throne. Once situated he lazily said, "Begin."
I looked at Saber and he looked at me. We began to slowly circle each other, both waiting for the other to make the first move. I slowly began to flip my dagger, so the tip was at the tip of my fingers.
As I watched Saber, I noticed something different. His eyes were slowly turning a golden color. Shit. It meant one of two things, he's either a werewolf or a vampire. Both would cost me my wings. Wonderful.
It wouldn't cost you your wings, love. But your freedom. The voice whispered through my mind.
Looking at Drayco, I could tell he was the one talking in my mind. There is no way in Hades that he could have known what I was thinking.
Actually, Adds. There is a way for me to read your thoughts.
How in the name of Hades can you do that? Never call me Adds again.
Your mental shields are down. He responded, completely ignoring what I had said.
I quickly put them back up, shooting a death glare his way as I did it. The smile he had on his face grew more, and that enraged me. I then made the first move. I threw my dagger, aiming it straight at his face.
He ducked just in time. It flew over his head and sank all the way to the hilt in the stone wall behind him.
Already breaking the rules, Adorite? My mother asked, her voice like a calm wind in my mind. Slowly, Saber raised himself off of the ground and looked behind him to my dagger. They should know by now that I had my fingers crossed. I said I understood the rules, but they don't apply to me. I answered her.
I was so distracted talking with my mother, that I almost had been speared with Sabers sword. In a blink of an eye, I had drawn my sword and blocked his strike. We stood there with our swords locked, both of us trying to gain the upper hand.
"You broke the first rule." Saber growled through clenched teeth. His eyes returned to their golden color as he called upon his other, wilder side, to gain the upper hand.
I made a pouty face and replied, "Oh, I'm sorry." My voice filled with false sympathy. "The world's gonna end."
What I said must have infuriated him because the next thing I knew he had me pinned against the stone wall. With his blade against my throat.
He smiled and said, "Surrender."
He had another thing coming if he thought I was going to surrender. The wall, he had pinned me against, happened to have something useful about it. My dagger, and it happened to be just within my reach. I raised my hand above my head and grabbed the hilt of my dagger.
Ripping it out of the wall, I slid out from behind his sword and stabbed Saber's thigh. Then rolled out of the way as he made a swing for my neck, crouching in the middle of the room.
I may have or may not have gotten a cut all along my neck, like he slid his sword across my neck, and I was still alive.
I didn't cut any arteries or anything else important, I made sure of that. But I would have a pretty nasty scar along my neck.
I stood up and watched, horrified, as Saber went on his hands and knees, starting to growl.
Holy mother of Zeus.
He's shifting.
