It took 5 months and a really heavy surgery before Will's neck was fixed. Within that time, he regained control of his limbs again. He was stuck using crutches, thin and slow.
His sister had given birth. It was a beautiful baby girl. Having a baby in the family changes the dynamics of things. It was a happy life, far from what they had months ago.
The night Will fell, they sailed all the way to Hokkaido where extended family members lived. It was also here that Will's cousin lived. A skilled surgeon. Mornings were really cold there. But Will's mother and aunt would cook really tasty meals that made Will's tummy warm. During the afternoon, they would play outside in the snow. Right after dinner, Will would start feeling pain on his joints so they all helped him go to bed early.
Right before Will falls asleep, he would listen to his family down stairs. One sense that remained was his good hearing. He would imagine being there with them. Watching TV, playing with his niece.
Then he'd open his eyes and see darkness. "Kate.." then Will would remember.Life was too perfect here. There must be something he could do. These feelings were slowly creeping up in Will's mind.
He took out his laptop and did some research. Communications of every sort were being blocked in the Philippines, drones flying all over the shores of the country.
"Drones, toy soldiers, curfew, war ships?. What else.." Will thought to himself.
Will didn't come out of his room and spent the day sketching and typing away on his laptop. Staying up all night however wasn't working too well anymore. His body was just too weak.
They gave Will his own special workshop by the basement. He would spend time there and he would make baby strollers, walkers and toys for his niece. It was a good hobby. It also refreshed his skills. After a while, Will also developed devices that created a force field around their house. This helped prevent pests and any sort of intruder out of their house.
"Galing nyan a. Baka kung san mo ren gamitin yan ha." the Thin Old man had already noticed things.
"Just playing around." Will replied.
After a week, Will's preparations had ended and he was now planning to sneak out and keep his family safe out here. He wanted to return home and see Kate.
Leaving the house was a very slow process. His arms, legs and back were so sore and weak. So carrying a big backpack while quietly inching his way forward on crutches was very tiring.
Finally, he got out onto the snow outside. It was night time. The wind was cold and foreign. It made him excited. So much so that he forgot about his aching joints.
"Going somewhere?" a voice called out to Will.
He turned to look and tripped, falling on the snow. Will, sat up in panic. "Who's there?!" he yelled.
It was so quiet. There weren't even crows around. He tried to listen, where was the voice coming from?
"You can't even find me and you still want to go out?" the voice spoke. It was frustrating. Will didn't like to be played around with. Then it hit him. He turned towards their trees and saw the source of the voice.
On one of the branches stood the Kuwago.
"You think you're ready?" he asked Will.
