The Bells

In the distance

The church bells ring

Through disconcerting fog

And quiet city streets

I walk the cobblestone

Sideways

Absently unaware

My heart beats quietly

Violent wind rushes past me

The screams I hear

Are not of the dying

But of the dead

I ask myself

Why I do this again

Clutching a cross

Close to my heart

The bells ring

Loud and clear

Shadows move beside me

Closing in

The air goes still

Like the fraction of a second

Before a storm hits

My heart

Stops
