Knowing that Hershel was fully supportive of a proposal gave William the courage to do what his heart truly desired. He wanted nothing more than to make Maggie Greene his wife. It was thought that crossed through his mind anytime he got lost in her beautiful green eyes, the colour reminding him of the trees or vast meadows of grass.
The day was all planned out and all William had to do was go through the motions. He readied himself, knowing that Maggie would return to her house soon. He waved a quick goodbye to his future father in law and walked out of the door.
Within a few minutes, Maggie pulled up in her red pick up truck and parked it. Once she stepped out of the car a wide smile painted across her face at the sight of her lover standing on her front porch.
"Hey you." He said, something that had become common between the two.
"Hey yourself." She replied back, walking over and wrapping her arms around his waist.
They often greeted each other with the same two words. It was their thing as they'd say anytime someone brought it up.
William wrapped his arms around her neck loosely and held her in his embrace for only a few moments before pulling away.
"Hey, why don't we take the horses out for a quick run? I know how much you love that, plus we can check out that spot we went to last time." He suggested, hoping the girl would go for it since his entire plan revolved around the answer. He knew she had to be careful with the baby. Even at this stage, something could happen that could cause a loss that would devastate the both of them. He wouldn't know what to do or how to handle such a tragic event had it occurred.
Maggie smiled up at him, "Please? I could use a good ride today." She pressed a kiss against his cheek quickly, "Let me get them ready. Come on." She said and walked off towards the stables.
William followed shortly behind her, his hand in his pocket fiddling with the square box that rested in it. He was nervous to say the least, suddenly feeling overwhelmed by the sheer thought of messing it all up. He watched as Maggie saddled the horses and attached their reigns, smiling in admiration at the woman he loved doing something that she enjoyed. It brought him utter joy just at the sight of her caring nature. He knew without a doubt that Maggie would be a wonderful mother.
Maggie soon finished and led the horses outside of the stable with William.
"Here you go. Hop on up cowboy." She said, patting William on the back as a playful gesture.
Will smiled and climbed onto the horse's back, "What do they say again? Save a horse, ride a cowboy? Yeah.. Yeah that's the one. " He replied, a chuckle slipping through his lips.
"Oh shut up." Maggie joked back, hopping on to her own horse.
The pair took off on their journey, heading through the fields and down the long winding pathways leading to a spot that overlooked a vast area of flat lands filled with crops and trees. The view was beautiful yet William's eyes remained on the woman that rode next to him. The horses came to a stop and the couple jumped down from their spots, tying the leads to a nearby fence post.
William grabbed Maggie's hand and took her to the edge of the overlook. For a moment, they gazed into each other's eyes. Nothing mattered except them at that moment. Their hearts beating as one, in one synchronised symphony. He shook away any nerves that he once had.
This was perfect.
"Maggie.." William said, breaking the silence between them. "You know how much I love you right?"
The woman furrowed her brows with a look of confusion, "Yes, of course. I mean, I sure hope so." She said, "That's a scary thing to ask, why?"
William took a deep breath and shook his head, "There's no reason to be scared. I just love you so much.. and with the baby on the way I thought now would be the perfect time."
"Perfect time for what, Will?" Maggie questioned, bringing her arms over her chest to cross them over one another.
William smiled and slowly put his hand into his pants pocket, shuffling around until he could pull out the matte black box that held the jewel inside of it. He tugged it out and held it out in front of him, dropping down to one knee. His gaze shifted upwards to a very startled Maggie, a single gasp erupting from her lips at the sight of William on the ground in front of her.
"Maggie.. I know that we are still quite young and I know we both are clueless about being parents and to be honest, a little scared out of our minds about it." He started, "But there isn't a doubt in my mind that we can figure it out. There is nobody in this world that I'd rather learn with or grow with and there hasn't been a single day go by that I haven't found myself falling even more in love with you than the day before."
Maggie's face crumpled, tears welled up in her eyes and threatened to fall. "William.." She spoke through the shakes in her voice.
William smiled through his own tears that had started to slowly trickle down his cheeks, "Maggie Greene, I really hope that you want this to be a forever thing. I want to live my life with you by my side, always. Will you marry me?"
And there it was.
The question he'd been longing to ask for months now. Out in the open.He thought it would take a while for Maggie to answer or even for a rejection to take place but a simple "Yes." was heard from the one towering above him.
"Yes." Maggie repeated, dropping down to her knees in front of him. She brought her hands to his cheeks, tugging him forward into a long kiss. She pulled away and looked down at the ring that was perched perfectly in the tiny box. "Yes, yes, yes!" She exclaimed, a wide smile tugging at the corners of her lips as she held her left hand towards Will.
William gasped, laughter erupting from his as he removed the ring from its box and carefully slid it onto her third finger. He wrapped his arms around her waist and stood to an upright position, spinning her around and lifting her feet from the ground beneath them. The sounds of their excitement echoed across the broad horizon.
He put her back down onto her feet and their lips crashed together like the waves of the ocean.
Maggie looked up at William with wide eyes, "I have to go tell daddy.. and Beth.. and Alison.. We have to tell everyone."
William grabbed her hand into his own, "Let's go do that." He said, helping her back on to her horse.
The freshly engaged couple rode back and told the others of their engagement. Happy as ever to finally be in a place where their relationship could be out in the open.
....to everyone except Victor.
