NIRAGI'S POV
My parents had been away for work for a month now and the "looking after" Kiyo was becoming more and more unbearable. She wasn't two years old! Only if they asked for something, especially my father, I didn't have much of a choice.
Ours was not a family like any other; my mother and father had married very young and soon after, I'd arrived. And with me also their problems...
My mother had fallen into postpartum depression and so it was mostly my father who looked after me (or perhaps I should say educating me by shouting and scolding me all the time). After about two years, she recovered and started going out almost every night; then, she met a guy, a certain Towa Fukuhara, who turned out to be her idiot who got her pregnant and with whom she ran off.
I didn't see my mother again for the next four years, until she returned to my father, repentant and with a daughter two years younger than me: Kiyo.
My father forgave her, but to remind her of her big mistake in her life, he refused to give his surname to her little girl, who continued to bear the surname of her biological father, Fukuhara.
To me, the difference in our last names had never meant anything, to me she was just my sister. I loved her, even though we argued basically every day and I was too proud to show her my true feelings.
She was very stubborn and unlike the other people I dealt with, she never listened to me. I was still a bit angry at her for changing the day we played Borderland; I had to bear the presence of the others and above all of Chishiya, but at least I could spend a few hours with my sister without arguing. Sometimes, we even teamed up to get through the Games.
I went into the kitchen and saw her sitting at the table, having breakfast. She was drinking coffee and she did make pancakes.
"Sweet breakfast today?" I asked her, going over to the frying pan and hoping to find some pancakes for me too.
"Mmm." She muttered, with her mouth full.
"Kiyo!" I glared at her, after I lifted the lid to find out that the pan was empty. "You're really mean!"
"I was hungry and you wouldn't get up anymore, so I ate them." She said, popping the last bit of pancake into her mouth.
I huffed and went to get a yogurt from the fridge.
I saw her smiling for no reason, then she also started humming.
"Please don't." I begged her. "You're too off key."
"Damn, you're really a pain in the ass."
"And why are you smiling?"
"Huh?"
"You're smiling like an idiot and for nothing."
"Who says it's for nothing?"
"Then, tell me why!"
"It's none of your business!"
She headed into the living room and I followed her.
"Kiyo! Stop!" I ordered, taking her arm.
"Niragi will you leave me alone?"
"Where did you go last night?" I released her arm.
"Having an ice cream with Kuina, but what does that have to do with this?" She said, fixing her hair.
"You're lying."
"I'm not lying."
"Yes you are, you fixed your hair."
