chapter 9: Weekness and lies

Kaz and Y/n stood outside the kaelish prince. She could hear the performers instruments from her position on the street.

"We get in, we get out. Come on." Kaz limped forward toward the door and swung it open to let Y/n walk in ahead of him. The Kaelish prince was filled with people. It reminded Y/n of the first time she set foot in the Crow Club. Majority of its inhabitants were gamblers. A dashing man in an old grey suit strode up to Y/n.

"ma'am, welcome to the Kaelish prince, may I lead you to one of the gambling tables?" He said, eagerly eying her dress and the masked servant standing beside her.

Y/n sighed sadly.

"No not tonight, I have business I must attend to with you queen. I am the duchess of Ravka, King Nicoli's new wife." The man nodded hurriedly.

"Of course, duchess. Right this way." He led her and Kaz toward a closed door near the bar. He was about to knock when Y/n pushed open the door and stepped inside, Kaz right behind her.

The set-up of the queen's office was much the same as Kaz's, a large desk in the centre and not much else in the room. The Queen was a small woman who looked about the same age as Y/n. She had black hair and Shu features. She did not seem surprised when two complete strangers burst into her room, uninvited.

Y/n squared her shoulders.

"I am a trainer at the Little Palace. I have news of your sister. You are her guardian, correct?" The Queen gestured to the chair in front of her. Y/n sat reluctantly.

"Your sister has gone missing. She left the little palace two weeks ago. A girl of her description was seen on a ship to Ketterdam six days ago." At this the queen sat straighter.

"She's here? In Ketterdam?" The queen demanded.

Y/n looked down sadly.

"I'm afraid the only ship recorded sailing to Ketterdam from Ravka sunk just off the 2nd harbour. Your sister's body was just discovered in the hold of the boat." Y/n clicked her fingers and Jessper and Wylan entered the room, both dressed in the same grey suit and masks as Kaz. They carried between them a stretcher. On the stretcher was the shape of a person, covered by a white sheet.

The queen clasped her hand over her mouth, tears brimmed in her eyes. Kaz took his mask off.

"I'm sorry." He said solemnly. The leader of the Lion's face changed from sadness to anger in a flash.

"Brekker, you bastard! Kill my sister then come to rub it in my face, did you?!" Kaz just laughed.

"That's not your sister." He said simply. Nina threw the sheet off her body, hands already raised.

"Lions!" Cried the queen. The man who lead Kaz and Y/n in earlier, entered along with another member of the Dime Lions. Both men held guns at the ready. But they weren't pointed at the crows, they were pointed at the queen. She stood quickly and dashed out of the room, the crows on her heals. As she entered the main room all the other lions turned toward her guns raised. The gamblers all began to flock toward the exit, leaving the lions, the crows, and the queen behind.

Kaz approached the Shu girl, who was backed up against the wall.

"Looks like you have been de-crowned, queen." He spat. The queen puled a small blade from her pocket and pointed it at Kaz's chest.

"You will die, Dirtyhands. If I fall, you will die." Kaz walked forward until the point of the knife was touching his suit. He sneered and held up a hand.

The signal.

Y/n clenched her fists together, she could feel the hearts of the Lions speeding up, faster and faster until...

Boom!

Pieces of the dime lions flew across the room. It was the most nauseating thing Y/n had ever seen. Everyone in the room looked like they were about to gag other than Kaz. The queen still had her knife pressed into his chest.

"Do it. Kill me, maybe if you do people will forget that your gang turned against you. Maybe you'll be remembered for killing the biggest bastard in the barrel instead of being the week leader you are... Well, were"

The Queen screamed as she drove the knife in. Blood blossomed on Kaz's clothes; blood poured from his mouth as he fell to the ground. Y/n dived toward him, the rest of the world fading away. She heard a bang from Jessper's gun and saw the queen fall but that was it. It was just her and Kaz, choaking on his own blood.

"No no no no. come on Kaz." She could feel his heartbeat slow. She tried to force it to speed up, but the knife had speared straight through it. Y/n yanked out the knife and ripped open Kaz's shirt. She was about to place her hand on his chest to try to speed his hear up again but he grabbed her wrist.

"Don't." He choaked out.

"It's my time to go. Maybe I'll see Mathias in the next life, give him a beating from Nina for leaving." Y/n looked Kaz in the eye.

"No." she said simply and placed her hand on his bare chest. He didn't flinch, maybe he was past the point of feeling, or caring. His heart was still slowing, even faster now. Y/n grabbed the knife off the ground and held it to her arm. She sliced open the skin and let the crimson blood drip into Kaz's wound. She felt his heart speed up again and his breath hitch. She felt a gloved hand on her own before the world went black.
