31. Let You Go

Kit watches the rain outside fall through the window, she hasn't been able to sleep all night despite Ross' attempts to convince her to go to bed.

Her mind was too full for her to rest.

But exhaustion takes even the most avid of minds, and as she watches the raindrops drip down the window, Kit's body relaxes and she begins to fall asleep, her head resting on the back of the sofa as she slowly drifts into unconsciousness.

And when she falls asleep, she dreams of verdant hills, magical woods, and a small cabin in the middle of a forest, where she and Jade lived, peacefully, like ordinary people.

In her dream, Jade is cooking while Kit tends to her only two horses, Eclipse and Midnight.

Kit is too busy cleaning the horses' hooves, her overgrown hair falling in her face, to notice Jade approaching.

- I think they're clean enough already- Jade says, startling Kit. - Unless you want me to clean the sensitive skin on their paws.

Kit lets go of Eclipse's hoof and cracks a smile, brushing her hair away from her face with the back of her hand.

- Ah, well- she says, - I guess my work here is done then.

Jade smiles, stepping closer to Kit and running her hand through Kit's hair.

- Come inside- she says, -I could use a trim on that wild hair, and besides, you need a bath, you stink like a horse.

Kit laughs and nudges her wife.

- You should give me a kiss then- she says, stepping forward towards Jade.

- By the gods- Jade laughs, running away, -No, Kit, not until you get that smell off of you.

Kit laughs and walks into her cabin, her smile widening at the smell of the muffins Jade made, muffins the ones Elora taught her to make and despite trying very hard, only Jade was able to actually learn how to make them as Kit's skills in the kitchen were approaching 0.

When Kit wakes up, hours later, she has a single name stuck on her lips, a name that was impossible to forget, even if you tried with all your might...

Jade opens her eyes, and immediately, she knows something is wrong.

She stands up, looking around, how long did she sleep for?

The clock on the wall gives her her answer: nine whole hours.

Jade honestly can't remember the last time she slept this long.

She makes her way to the secret fridge, from where she pulls out a blood bag and turns it inside a glass cup, feeding herself in a few minutes, eager to go see Kit.

She cleans up her mess and walks up the stairs every two steps, for some unknown reason her heart is beating fast in her chest.

She opens the door, only to be welcomed by an empty room.
