We walked downstairs and were met with the slightly agitated face of madi's mom.
"Madisyn do you think you could pick up dinner please I have to run to the office and fill out some forms?" Her mom asked.
"Uh sure. anything in particular?" Madisyn asked. I couldn't help but notice the slight irritation in her voice.
"Not really." she said walking out the door, letting an eerie silence fill the room.
"C'mon I'll drive." I offered reaching for the keys.
She nodded and followed me out the door stopping to lock it behind her.
We drove around town looking for someplace good and eventually decided on what she was craving- kfc.
I laughed at the thought of mrs.-prim-and-proper-luxurious-lifestyle eating greasy chicken and French fries.
"What's so funny?" Madi asked defensively.
"Nothing love calm down." I said. a small smile played on my lips as I watched her out of the corner of my eye just look completely zoned out and so lost in her own thoughts. I've always wondered what goes on in that pretty little head of hers.
We pulled into the driveway which was empty.
"What the hell! She said she'd be back by now." Madi said sounding a little hurt.
"Hey it's okay. okay? Look at all this chicken you get to eat since you had to have it." I said laughing and hugging her.
She grumbled and opened her door.
"She comes home for a week and she's never here! What's new!" She yelled frustrated.
I sighed and got the food.
I hated seeing her like this.
She unlocked the door and walked in.
I followed quickly behind her and sat the food on the counter.
"Like what the hell is her problem?! I'm her only child and she's so wrapped up in her own little entrepreneur life that she doesn't even have time for her daughter and when she is here she's never fucking here! She doesn't even care! She just puts on a damn show for everyone! After- after the accident with my dad she died he took a piece of her along with him. She hates me. She even told me she couldn't stand o look at me cause I looked like my father! My own mother said that to my face! She she just!-" she was swallowed up by her own cries.
I sat the plates I was filling down and ran over to her.
"Hey. Hey. It's alright love you have every right to be mad." I said hugging her.
She sobbed into my chest and I let her.
I rubbed circles into her back and placed a kiss to her temple.
"It'll be alright but honey you should probably calm down. Okay? I'm no doctor but I don't think all this stress is good for you or the baby." I said softly.
She calmed down and sniffled.
I wiped away her tears as her eyes connected with mine.
A crease folded into her forehead and I could see the wheels turning in her head.
"What day is it?!" She asked quickly.
"Uh the 24th." I said looking at my phone.
And just like that her mood changed from broody and sad to ecstatically happy.
"Oh my gosh Harry I almost forgot! Guess what!?" She yelled excitedly.
"What?!" I asked smiling.
"We have a doctors appointment tomorrow! And even better news- we get to find out if it's a boy or a girl! And we get to hear the heartbeat!" She squealed hugging me.
I laughed and wrapped my arms around her.
"Wow.wow! Babe this is really happening! We're gonna be parents!" I said grinning ear to ear.
She giggled that marvelous laugh and it was the most perfect moment ever.
That is until wicked witch of the west dropped by.
"What the hell are you talking about!?" Mrs. Reece chimed in and she did not sound too happy.
We turned around to see her standing in the door way with a disgusted look on her face.
Madisyn looked at me nervously as if she were asking should we tell her or wait and I gave her a slight nod.
My arm instinctively wrapped around her waist and madi cleared her thought.
"Well uh mom I have something to tell you. Uh you see I'm kinda pregnant..." She said quietly.
Her hand reached up and sat on her somewhat flat stomach. Her lips were pulled up into a small smile and I smiled down at her.
"You're what!?" Her mom screeched.
Madi's smile fell a little.
"I'm pregnant." She said a little bit confidently.
"You're only 18! What do you think the neighbors will think when they find out?!" She yelled.
"I'm very displeased with you young lady! First you run around acting like you don't care and then you think it's okay to bee seen in public with some- some scumbag like him! Then you tell me you're pregnant?! What the hell is wrong with you!?" She screamed taking a few steps towards madi.
I saw the ghastly look in madi's eyes as she tried to hold back the tears.
She was speechless. And I was quite take aback by her mothers words.
"Don't you dare talk to me like that!" Madi's sudden burst of anger surprised me a little.
She suddenly got taller and louder.
"Don't ever call Harry a scumbag because he's the only family I've ever known! You seriously have the nerve to stand there and criticize me!? Look at yourself! You care more about yourself and what people think about you than your own daughter! Hell you don't care! About me, your grandchild, you don't even mention dad! You probably wish Liam wasn't here to save me when I tried to kill myself!" She yelled. Her anger and rage boiled over and her mother looked even madder.
In a split second her mother's hand was up and she slapped madi so hard.
"You have no right to say that! Don't ever talk to me like that ever! EVER! Have I made myself clear!?" She roared.
Madi just looked at the ground and nodded as the tears fell onto the floor.
"Don't you ever touch her ever again!" I raged. I turned my back on her and helped Madisyn upstairs before her bitchy mother could say anything else.
I heard the front door slam shut and tires screech away.
I placed a washcloth on her cheek and pulled her into my chest as the sobs escaped her.
Tears streamed my cheeks as I replayed the grisly scene downstairs.
Her mother truly didn't care and then she hit her! She hit my girl! No one hits my girl! NO ONE!
I placwd a kiss to her lips and she looked up at me with puffy, red eyes and tear streaked cheeks and sniffled.
"Thanks for being here for me Harry. You have no idea how much you mean to me." She said hugging me.
I hugged her back so tight and let the tears escape my eyes.
"I love you so so so much and I will never ever leave you. Ever." I said sincerely.
She pulled away and looked around.
"We still have food downstairs it's probably getting cold." She said quietly.
She started to walk out of her room but I stopped her.
"What are you-"
I scooped her up in my arms and gently sat her on her bed.
She looked at me confused as I walked to her door.
I returned around and said "stay." And went into the kitchen. I returned to her room and handed her a plate which she happily took.
I sat next to her and turned the tv on.
We watched cupcake wars and ate our dinner in a content silence.
"I'm gonna go take a hot, bubble bath." She said sighing.
I gave her a small smile and kissed her forehead before helping her to her feet.
"Okay." I said.
"Care to join me." She said smirking.
"Hell yea. Just let me take these downstairs." I said grabbing the plates.
"Ugh two minutes." She said walking into the bathroom.
I ran downstairs and froze in my tracks.
Mrs. Reece was sitting on the couch crying softly.
I sat the dishes in the sink as quietly as I could to quickly evade the awkward situation but a stupid fork slid and clanged in the sink.
"Damnit!" I muttered.
Her head shot up and we just stared at each other awkwardly.
I felt kinda bad for her.
She looked so sad and hurt.
Id seen that look before.
And I know what it felt like to be the one wearing that look.
" um listen. Mrs. Reece, I'm sorry for yelling at you and I know you've been through a lot-"
"Do you love her?" She interrupted.
"Um yes mam, I do. Very much." I said honestly.
She smiled a sad smile.
"Good. Do me a favor and don't break her heart. She wouldn't be able to lose you. I'm sorry for the way I acted. Probably not a great first impression." She said quietly.
"I uh I won't I promise." I said sincerely.
"Oh and one more thing," she said looking up at me.
"I do care. I care a lot I just don't want to see her hurt ever again. I have been so absent from her life and I regret so much of what I've done but thank you for loving her and thank you so much for being there for her. I know I don't seem like the type to throw around apologies and thank yous, but thanks and I uh I'll try to change. For her." She said quietly.
"Your welcome. Goodnight mrs. Reece." I said softly
"You can call me Anna." She said giving me a small smile.
"Goodnight Anna." I said before turning around.
My mouth fell open when I saw madi standing in the stairway scowling at us.
I hurried upstairs when she turned away.
"Love I'm sorry!" I said quickly.
"Who's side are you on?!" She asked.
"Yours of course but she just wants to try and fix things. She's not what we think. She cares love, she's trying." I said calmly.
"That's bullshit and you know it!" She seethed slamming the bathroom door shut behind her.
I laid my head on the door and groaned.
"Babe. I'm sorry okay. I'm just trying to help." I said through the door.
I heard running water and sighed again.
She just needs time to cool off.
I sat on her bed and just watched tv and figured i wouldn't argue with her on this I didn't want to push her away.
I thought about me and Anna's conversation and sighed.
I do love madi and I don't want to ever loose her. I'd die if I lost her.
I know what I have to do to make sure she knows I'll always be here. So she knows I'll never leave.
I'll have to marry her. I smiled at the thought and hurried downstairs to ask Anna something I'd never thought I'd ask.
