As His coffee landed on his crisp, clean shirt, her books plummeted to the floor. "Shit! who the hel-" he stopped when he saw me."oh i'm so sorry!uh here let me help you." he said in a cute British accent. "um thanks." was all I could manage. no one like him ever talked to someone like me. I picked up my books and hurried off with my head low. I about screamed when I felt a hand on my shoulder. I whipped around almost running into him again. "you dropped this." he said shyly handing me my phone. "er um thanks again." I said quietly fixing my glasses. I turned away before I could get lost in those emerald eyes. Oh my god why am I such a fucking klutz. I silently scolded myself. I finally got to my 5th period just before the bell. I found my seat next to Liam and silently sat next to him. he looked over and smiled. we've been best friends ever since third grade and for juniors in high school together we were pretty smart. sometimes too smart. we were considered the nerds of kanebridge high. After answering every question mr. Kline asked the bell rang. Liam and I got up and walked to our lockers. his was always next to mine. we were inseparable. we walked off to the library to eat lunch at our secret place or the corner were no one ever goes. We walked in and I was shocked to see the boy with emerald eyes sitting at a table reading. him! reading! but he's so... well so popular. he probably has millions of friends and yet he's eating lunch in the library. what is wrong with him? Liam's hand tugged me forward and I reluctantly walked towards him. great. the boy I was so desperate to avoid was who I was about to walk past. maybe he won't notice.  "hey. sorry about earlier." he said flashing me a million dollar smile. "don't mention it. no big deal." I stammered. Hurriedly walking away, not wanting to talk any longer.
Liam jogged to catch up. "Hey. You ok?" he asked a small smile on his face. that's what I love about Liam he's always happy. That and he can read me like an open book.
"Uh yea. Just perfect." I smiled back, praying he wouldn't notice the panic in my eyes.
He simply nodded, "Fine. Don't tell me about it, but you know I'm bound to figure it out sooner or later."
I let out a small laugh, and continued my slow walk between the library bookshelves. As I scanned through the titles etched into the spines of every book, my head began to wander. Stormy, dreary, grey cities; deep enchanting forests; and adrenaline pumping, dystopian societies- complete with at least one character always being the rebel, unwilling to fall into the clutches of conformity.
This was my safe space. Books have always seemed to be my knight in shining armor whenever things got tough. I could open a book and fall into a world that was far enough away from all my demons and pain.

The bell rang for 8th period, startling me back down to reality.
I looked around the room, and noticed that the boy was nowhere to be found.
Liam grabbed me by the arm, dragging me back out into the shark infested waters. Walking to class, it suddenly dawned on me that I left my english assignment in my locker. I quickly diverted Liam back to our lockers, and with the simple turn of my combination lock, all hell broke loose.
Instead of being greeted by my locker interior that was custom decorated by yours truly- complete with cute magnets holding up mini Polaroids, boring textbooks, and a mini todo list- an explosion of flour burst out at me. I gasped and stood there in shock as i felt all the attention on me. I was the laughing stock of the crowd. Humiliated, I turned to discover that the source of the roaring laughter was a large group that had formed, and among them was emerald eyes himself. Tears began to fall from my eyes as Liam rushed over to help.
He pulled me into his side, and quickly pushed his way through the crowd, and into the gym locker room. Their laughter still ringing in my ears.
Liam grabbed some paper towels, and began brushing his fingers through my hair in an attempt to remove the flower from my curly locks.
After a deafening five minutes of silence and knotted hair, Liam managed to remove most of the flour from my hair.
He sat down beside me and lifted my chin up to meet his eyes. "Are you ok?" he asked.
"Not really." I mumbled.
"Want to talk about it?"
I sighed and wiped away my tears. " I don't know." After a long pause, Liam looked over patiently.
"Don't laugh, but remember that guy I accidentally spilt coffee on?"
He quietly nodded.
"Well, after profusely apologizing, he actually spoke to me. This guy is tall, kind of attractive, and very popular. I was flustered by what he said and practically ran off. When the flour explosion happened he was the one laughing at me." I looked at the ground trying to avoid Liam's pity stare.
He brushed my hair behind my ear. "Hey, don't worry. No one hurts my best friend and gets away with it."
I chuckled and fell into his comforting hug.
I could've stayed there all day long, but I knew I couldn't just sit and wallow in self pity. "Thanks for being my best friend and always having my back." I said tears staining his shirt.
When I was all cleaned up we walked to literature and took our seats just as mr. Walsh began "all right class today we will be reading tuck everlasting. so please pull out the novels that I assigned you and turn to chapter 5."
