So we just have sex to solve all our problems
Let's do it again
And I wanna get stuck between your teeth like cotton candy
So you'll remember me, darlin'

{Jace}

Alec and I stand in the corner of the kitchen, sipping on warm beer and trying our best not to notice the passing glances we were receiving from the opposite sex. Alec was never particularly interested in that kind of attention, not from women anyway and I had other things on my mind. While this party was supposed to be for me it was really just another excuse for Isabelle to invite people over to her house and wear a new outfit. Not that she didn't care I was leaving, she did. She'd cried about it for days but still.

"Do you have everything ready for the move? All packed?" Alec leans towards me so he can speak into my ear over the music which isn't difficult for him as he's a few inches taller than I am and I nod, taking another sip of the disgusting liquid in my plastic cup, making a face. There was nothing worse than warm, flat beer.

"I don't have that much but my parents are keeping some stuff in storage for me here. My gran doesn't have space for it all." I explain to him and he nods gravely. My grandmother, Imogen, was seriously unwell. She had been diagnosed with dementia a couple of years previous and had recently found out she has stage 4 ductal carcinoma, which is just another name for aggressive breast cancer.

I loved her dearly, I didn't see her that often as my parents brought me up in London before moving us here to New York and she has always lived in Los Angeles but whenever we did visit, much to my mothers dismay, I would help her bake and tend her garden and play the piano for her, badly I might add but she never complained. I let her take me to her church and let the other older ladies coo over me and eventually pass me the numbers of their granddaughters.

Not that I would tell anyone this, I think even Alec would be surprised that I enjoyed spending my time helping her bake cookies and planting peonies but really I just enjoyed making her smile.

Alec must see in my face that I'm thinking about it too much, getting too emotional so he slaps a hand onto my back.
"It'll be alright man, we can visit you whenever we're free and it'll be nice to be so close to the beach. I think you'll like it. Your Grandma will be really happy to have you there too." He's making the best of a bad situation but the reality is that my gran was dying, she barely knew who I was half the time and I was leaving behind the only friends I've ever had my whole life. It was bleak but it was true. God I really wanted to get shitfaced tonight.

"Is tonight the night you think?" Alec asks, nodding towards the couple across the kitchen. He knows I've spotted that too, that I was always acutely aware of it. It was another thing I was trying not to think about because it was useless and confusing.
"The night for what?" I raise an eyebrow at him like I have no idea what he's talking about and he gives me his signature 'done with this shit' look.
