Alaric's pov
Three years after we parted, I still thought of her sometimes. Wondered how she was doing and who she had become. If she was happy or if she, like me, was haunted by memories.
We had loved deeply and lost in kind, and there were times I wondered if I had ever truly moved on. If that part of me was lost to her forever.
Then one day, I looked up from my book in the park and there she was. Seraphina. My heart stilled at the sight of her, familiar yet strange. A decade had passed us by, and still she took my breath away. Our eyes met from across the way, and immediately I was transported back in time. I saw the boy and girl we used to be, full of hopes and dreams, for a moment. Then just as quickly, the present came crashing back in.
She looked at me with eyes both wary and wistful. I'm sure my own held equal measure. What an odd pair we made, ghosts of a lost love, come together again.
I blinked and glanced away, breaking the spell. When I looked back, her expression was guarded once more. She nodded, and I did the same, acknowledging the shared memories without words.
"It was good to see you," I said softly. The truth was, it had stirred up longing and sorrow in equal measure. But there were no happy endings for souls like ours.
"You too," she whispered. And with that, she walked away, as she always did. As I always let her.
Our chance meeting had reopened old wounds, a brief glimpse into roads not taken. But the deepest scars remained, too deep to ever fade completely. We had loved fully and lost the same, and there were no do-overs for heartbreak like ours.
Though a part of my heart would always belong to her, I had built a life of my own. A life filled with loves lost and found anew. Her ghost would walk with me still, as it always had, but it no longer ruled me as it once did.
We were souls set free, haunting and haunted, forever drifting on separate paths that crossed only briefly, yet again. Our time had come and gone like a dream. This was all that remained.
The ache in my chest was a reminder of joy and anguish bound as one. An old pain, long since dulled, that awoke at the sight of her familiar face.
We lived on, guiding lights to each other in darkness, forever tethered by memories of a love that shaped us and set us free. Two stars, forever hung in the night sky, shining with a light both wistful and sorrowful. A reminder of hearts that beat as one, for a moment in time, and ever after in quiet dreams.
Our story was meant as a truth, not a warning. That love dies hard, even in ruin. The heart remembers always. The deepest wounds never fade completely, they merely become a part of us, like scars we carry into each and every dawn.
