Seraphina's PoV
She twisted the knife in deeper with each cruel word and act, enjoying the sound of his agony. She told herself it was what he deserved for the way he had wronged her. She told herself she was in control, that the pain she felt was only for him.
But it was a lie. The truth was, she was dying inside with each blow she dealt. She could see the hurt in his eyes, hear it in the cracks of his trembling voice, and it shredded her heart to pieces.
Part of her knew she was being unjust, that she had taken things too far. But the anger and resentment she felt towards him ran too deep to be reasoned with. She wanted to see him suffer as she had suffered.
When he started retaliating, she was furious but not surprised. "He deserved it!" she told herself. "He had it coming after all the pain he caused me."
She refused to feel guilty, even as her own world crumbled around her. She told herself it was what she deserved for the hurt she had inflicted.
They dueled with cruelty, nor a kindness between them. Their hatred for each other had consumed them.
It wasn't until she looked into his eyes and saw only disgust that the truth finally broke through. She had lost him. The delicate balance of love and hate was gone, and in its place was only hate. Hate for what they had become.
She knew then what she must do. As much as it pained her, as much as she didn't want to, she had to leave him behind.
She transferred schools without so much as a backward glance. Her heart was shattered but she told herself it was for the best. This was goodbye.
The anger and resentment still lingered for a time, but over the months and years, they faded. In their place was only deep sorrow for the souls they had lost and the love that could have been. Their hearts were broken, but in the end, it was they who broke them.
She often wondered if things might have been different if they had confessed their true feelings. If love could have saved them from the anguish they inflicted upon one another. But they were cowards, and cowards they remained.
Their story was a cautionary tale of hearts torn asunder by lies and fear. Of trust betrayed and hope forsaken. But it was also a reminder that even in darkness, light finds a way to shine through. That every ending also holds within it the seeds of new beginnings.
And so she thought of him sometimes, her heart both aching and at peace. Wishing him well in the life he built, as she had built her own. Hoping that from the ruins of what they lost, something beautiful emerged at last.
The circle of life brings pain and joy together as two sides of a coin. Their story was a reflection of that truth, as poignant as it was bitter. And when at long last the circle came round again, she believed they would find welcome in the dawn. Broken hearts mended, mistakes forgiven. Love transformed.
