Chapter 2

The most magical time for Faith's parents was when their beautiful baby girl was born. She was a carbon copy of her mother, inheriting her stunning dark skin, gorgeous features, and voluptuous body. However, no one could deny that she had her father's enchanting amber eyes, which resembled shimmering pools of liquid gold. For the first few years of her life, they were just like any ordinary family. But when Faith turned five, the line of normalcy faded away, and the first sign of her ability emerged; a single spade behind her neck.

At the tender age of five, Faith could solve complex equations, understand intricate emotions, and her behavior and mannerisms far exceeded what was expected for her age. Her parents sought to hide her ability from the world, but her Grandfather was adamant about helping her learn from him. He'd always say that for an Ace to understand themselves, they must first understand their ability.

Her father believed that it'd be best if Faith lived a 'normal life,' confined by society's standards for a traditional family. However, with her ability, her grandfather knew that her life would be everything but normal. When her father realized that 'normal school' wasn't an option, he decided to homeschool Faith, and at that moment, he realized that his grandfather was right.

September 2nd was the day Faith left her family to attend The Academy For The Aces. As she stared at her reflection, waves of anxiety swamped her. The navy blue uniform, embellished with the school's yellow monogram, was one that everyone could easily distinguish, almost like a prison uniform.

"FAITH, HURRY UP, YOU'RE GOING TO MISS THE CARRIAGE!" her mother shouted from downstairs.

"I'M COMING!" Faith shouted back.

Her anxiety turned to sadness as she took one last glance at her bedroom. It was quite quaint, adorned with vintage furniture and delicate floral patterns. Soft, pastel hues created a calming atmosphere, complemented by lace curtains gently swaying in the breeze. A warm, handwoven rug lay on the wooden floor, adding a touch of coziness. Faith took her suitcase filled with all her essentials and skipped downstairs.

"You'll grow to love the academy, Faith, I promise," her mother smiled.

"And I promise I will not be returning to the academy next year," Faith retorted.

"It's for the best, Faith. Your grandfather was right. You need to understand your ability. Hiding you away from the world is not the answer," her father said.

"I get it, Dad. I need to understand my ability to understand myself," Faith sighed. "I must leave now; the ride to London is almost two hours," she stated.

"You're right. The carriage is waiting, let's go" her father said.

As the carriage departed from Faith's hometown, her gaze remained fixed on the passing scenery. She felt a mixture of relief and wistfulness. Faith always felt like an outsider in this town, hiding her true self from judgmental eyes. Amidst the feeling of liberation, there was a sense of sorrow for leaving behind the place that shaped her, despite its challenges.

The carriage wound through familiar streets, and memories of seclusion and loneliness intertwined with the fond moments Faith managed to create. The old library, where she sought refuge in books to escape prying glances, evoked both solace and a pang of longing.

Glancing at the train station approaching in the distance, a mix of apprehension and acceptance filled Faith's heart. The thought of exploring new horizons and embracing her talent openly gave her a glimmer of hope, yet it was also daunting to step into the unknown.

The carriage's wheels creaked softly, providing a gentle backdrop to Faith's thoughts, as she wondered if she'll find acceptance and belonging at the academy.

The train station came into view, and Faith's heart raced with anticipation. It was time to leave this town behind, but the memories, both bitter and sweet, would always stay with her. She took a deep breath, summoning the courage to face the world beyond her sheltered existence.

As the carriage came to a stop, Faith felt a mix of overwhelming emotions. She stepped out, her eyes lingering on the town she once resented, but that had also been an integral part of her journey. Her father took her luggage out of the carriage, and Faith took it from him reluctantly.

"I'll miss you," he smiled and then embraced her in a hug.

"I'll miss you too, Dad," Faith sighed, "but like I said, I will not be returning to the academy for another year," she reassured.

"I know," he chuckled, the atmosphere lightening just a bit, "write to your mom and me, okay?" he said.

"I will, Father. You two do the same," Faith grinned.

With a conflicted smile, she bid her father farewell once more, ready to embrace the uncertainties ahead.
