I slowly walk away from the hospital room and round the corner. When I see the others they give me warm smiles. They must not have heard.
"Did you tell her what you wanted to tell her?" Johnson asks me. I nod. "Good. Did you say everything you wanted to?" I shake my head.
"Why not?" Sammy asks. I bite my lip to prevent me from bursting into tears.
"Because...because she died. She died when I was talking to her." I say and feel tears move down my cheeks. I see everyone's expressions soften and look upset after I say what I just did. Nate comes over and gives me a hug. "I watched her die." I say and sob. I feel some of Nate's tears fall on my shoulder. Nate was the only one who knew how much I loved her. He's the one who set me up with Amber in the first place. He told me that I needed to be happy. He said for me and the fans. I had to be my usual happy and cheery self. Ella made me that way. She was my everything. Without her I am nothing. Having Amber around made me some what happy. Ella was my girl. She was the one person I could talk to no matter what mood I was in. She could always make me smile. I didn't have that connection with anyone else.
We were all at the house. Nate was in his room trying to calm down. Jared was in his room crying. Ashley, Johnson, Sammy and Mrs. Dillon were downstairs talking to one another. I was in Ella's room looking at the pictures on her wall. She had one wall covered in photos. Most of them were of us. Me, her, Johnson and Ashley. I continue to look at the pictures when something catches my eye. It was a book on her bookshelf. I know this room like the back of my hand considering the time we spent in here. Her house was bigger than all of ours. II pick up the white book and look at the cover. It was written in gray which said "No Separation" written on the front. I open it up and look at the first page. It had a little quote on the first page. While I flip the next page I realize it's a photo album. Nobody has seen these pictures. Because I don't remember them being taken.
I take the book downstairs. "Johnson, Ash look what I found." I say and hand them the album. They both look at it confused. If Ashley doesn't know what it is then nobody knew about this. They open it and Ashley reads the quote on the first page.
"I couldn't ask for better best friends." The first page was a picture of her and Ella. It was when the four of us went to dinner. Ella made a hilarious joke and Ashley was laughing. The picture caught them both in mid laugh. She turns the next page and her eyes light up. "This was the first time we hung out." She says and smiles a little. They keep flipping through the book.
"I remember this day." Johnson says as he looks at the photo. He was giving Ella a piggyback ride. That was before him and Ashley started dating. They continue to flip trough the album till they reach this picture.
"Homecoming." I say and smile. Johnson and I were both were wearing suits while the girls wore dressed. Ashley wore a white long dress. Ella wore a navy blue dress that was tight up top and got loose around her hips. Her bangs were braided and her hair was pulled to the side in a bun. It was a little messy but it looked good. She looked beautiful that night. Ashley reads the next quote.
"Love is just a feeling. It then becomes a necessity when it's directed towards someone." She flips the page and they're all pictures of Ella and I. They flip to the last picture in the album and it catches me by surprise.
"That day," I say looking at the picture. "was the best day of my life." I say remembering the day. I took Ella to the lake and we spent the entire day there. When the sun was setting I kissed her while we were sitting on the dock. Someone must have snapped a picture for her. Her mother looks through the album after we were done.
"You two looked good together." Sammy says. I thank him and take the book back from her mom as she finishes looking at it.
"I'm gonna go get some sleep." I say and head upstairs after the book is back in my possession. Mrs. Dillon told me to sleep in Ella's room. I thought it was a little weird but she told me it's what Ella would have wanted.
I lay awake staring at the ceiling. I couldn't fall asleep. No matter how hard I tried I just couldn't fall asleep. I get up and slip on my shoes. I quietly go downstairs and to the kitchen where the key rack is. I grab Ella's keys and go to her car.
The lights turn on and I dim them so they give me the amount of light I need. The shed was unlocked so I grab a football out of there. No matter how many times I'm here all I can think about is what happened on this field two years ago.
There was two minutes left in the game and we were down by six. We just needed a touchdown and a field goal to win the game. I was standing next to Sammy, who was the quarterback, as he gives us our next play.
"Everybody got it?" He asks. We nod then break going into position. Sammy calls hike and I run down the field. I can hear the cheers from the crowd as Sammy throws the ball towards me. I jump up to catch it. I grasp it and start to go down. Before I can land someone hits me and I land on my back. I landed in the end zone so we still go the touchdown. I go to get up and I can't. I try again and feel all mu muscles tighten up. I yell out in pain. The first person by my side was Sammy. "Jack! Are you okay?" He asks taking off his helmet then mine. I barely manage to shake my head as it hurts to do anything. Sammy call the coach over. "He's hurt. Bad." Sammy tell him.
"Can you walk?" Coach asks.
"N-no." I manage to say.
"He needs to go to the hospital." Coach says. Sammy waves someone over. A girl runs onto the field.
"She can drive him." Sammy says and coach nods. "Take my car and drive him to the hospital. My keys are in the pocket of my jeans." She nods. "Be careful babe." He says and lightly kisses her. She runs off to the locker room to retrieve his keys.
I then realize that the amazingly beautiful girl who drove me to the hospital was Ella. She looked so different from then and when I first talked to her Senior year.
I was throwing the football to myself when I get a call
"Hello?"
"Is this Jack Gilinsky?" A man asks.
"It is."
"I'm Dr. Henry. I helped Ella at the hospital. I'm going to need you to come down to the hospital immediately." I quickly hang up and go to the hospital.
I arrive and do to the desk.
"Hi I'm here to see Dr. Henry." I tell her. She stops filing her nails and pops her gum. When she sees me she sits up straighter.
"He's in room 295 right now." She says and I quickly run there. I get to the room and open the door. What appears in front of me makes my heart stop.
"Hey Jack." She says quietly.
"Ella." I breathe out.
