MKs POV:
At 4 in the morning, I hear Tim open the door. What was I doing up at 4 in the morning? Thinking about my life decisions. I feel kind of...detached. Seeing Tim and Red Son like this makes me wonder if there was ever anything between us. Nonetheless, I have a test tomorrow, so I should get some sleep.
~time skip~
I know I failed that exam. I'm sure Red Son and Tim did fine, though. I could see them giggling together at the back of the class. Mei tried to comfort me, though something about Red Son seemed off. He seemed less confident with Tim. Alas, Mei and I are going out to lunch at Cafe Rosé again.
I pull up to the parking lot and spot Mei through the window. Waving to her, I step out of my car and walk into the cafe. Immediately, I spot Tim. Though I try not to, I can't help but feel a twinge of resentment when I see him. If I had known Red Son was gay, would I have done things differently? Would I be in Tim's position? There's no time to think of what could have been. Only time to think about what can be. At least, that's what Mei tells me.
"Hey, MK. How are you feeling?" Mei asks.
"Fine," I reply, knowing it's not true.
"Hey, no. When someone says they're fine that means they're not fine," Mei says to me. I roll my eyes.
"Whatever you say."
"Are you still hung up over you-know-who?" Mei asks.
"Yes."
"Cmon MK. You guys were never even a thing. You need to move on already," she says. Her words sting because I know they're true. I fight back tears.
"Look, I didn't mean it like that. Listen, they opened a new arcade a couple blocks away. How about we go there tonight?" Mei asks, noticing my sadness.
"Sure," I say, because at this point I don't care. I'll do anything to not be alone with my thoughts, or, even worse, with Red Son and Tim. Speak of the devil, Tim comes walking up to us.
"Hey cutie, can I get you anything to eat?" Tim says, winking at me.
I recoil. "Aren't you and Red Son dating?"
He narrows his eyes at me. "Yes, I was just kidding."
"Whatever. I'll take a BLT with fries and he'll take..." Mei says, glancing up from her menu to look at me. I snap out of my thoughts, which are reeling.
"I'll take the same thing as her," I say with a distracted wave. Tim can't be saying things like that, can he? That's not a thing people in a relationship do, right? I wait for Tim to walk away before turning to Mei.
"Can he go around flirting with other people when he's dating Red Son?" I ask.
Mei looks out the window and shrugs. "I don't know, I'm sure they've had a discussion or something. It's probably fine. Besides, you need to distance yourself from Red Sons life, MK."
I nod, but in the back of my mind it just doesn't sit right with me that Tim acts like this when Red Sons not around. Does Red Son know? I would treat him better than Tim does, I just know. After eating, Mei and I drive home to get ready to party at the arcade.
After an hour or so, I hear a knock on my door. I assume it's Mei, so I go to answer it. Instead of seeing Mei, I'm greeted by Red Son.
"Red Son! Hey," I say.
"Hey...MK," Red Son says, cringing.
"Listen, I-" we say at the same time.
"You go first," I say.
"No, you," Red Son says.
I open my mouth to speak, before Tim walks in. "Hello Red Son, it's good to see you!"
"Hey babe," Red Son says to Tim, giving him a kiss. Red Son looks to me, embarrassed. "Gotta go," he says, before shutting the door behind him, leaving with Tim. I sink onto the couch and sigh. I wanted to talk to Red Son about how Tim was hitting on me. Before I can wonder what he wanted to talk to me about, I hear Mei knock on the door.
"Hey, Mei," I say.
"Ready to party?" Mei asks, grabbing my arm and yanking me out of the threshold and into the hallway.
"I am now," I say, attempting a smile.
Mei is oblivious. "Good."
I wonder how much longer I can go masking my true emotions before I snap.
