Kenzie

This is definitely not how I imagined my first day of school going. I hate being the center of attention and now everywhere I go whispers and loud jeers follow me. It’s a nightmare.

“I can’t believe he left Cassie for that!”

“Who the hell does she think she is to break up CASSON?”

“I thought Mason had better taste”

“It’s always the quite ones”

“I wonder if Mason is into sharing.”

I want to scream on top of my lungs that I am not the only one in that picture. Mason kissed me not the other way around! But I know they won’t care, guys always get away with stuff like this.

The most I have seen Mason suffer from this is his friends jokingly ribbing him about liking a nerd and even then he just brushed it off and they all laughed about it. He can do no wrong.

To them I am only the King’s charity case, one that turned around and betrayed them. So they think it’s okay to be gross to my face because that’s what traitors get.

All day people ask me how I was able to seduce Mason, I get countless threesome propositions while others hand me their numbers scribbled on pieces of paper for “when Mason dumps me”.

As I walk to my locker I can feel them whispering and snickering as I pass by. When I reach my locker I understand why. Sprayed on it is the word “traitor” amongst various sexual profanities. When I open the locker an avalanche of condoms in a foamy solution rain down on me. Everyone in the hallway burst into hysterical laughter.

Many students have their phones out.I refuse to cry and give them what they want so I walk quickly to my dorm room for a change of clothes. Because of this I am 5 minutes late for calculus where Ms. Hendricks berates me for my tardiness in front of the whole class. I explain to her why I had to get a change of clothes but she doesn’t care. I will find out what my punishment is at the end of the day. Figures, Cassie is one of her favorites.

As lunch approaches I am filled with dread just thinking about going back to the cafeteria so I send a text in the group chat, asking if the three of us can have lunch off campus. As I walk out of class both Ava and Amara haven’t replied yet.

Up ahead I notice Amara check her phone and then show it to the girls she is walking with. They all laugh and head to the cafeteria.

Ava has read but not replied yet so I wait 5 more minutes but nothing. I get some snacks from a vending machine and head to my favorite study nook.

Classes are over for the day yet Ava has still not replied and I have seen her only in the two classes we share and she is always in a rush in-between classes.

I get an official email from the dean about punishment for my tardiness. I have to clean the stables. I love the horses but cleaning up after them is not how I thought I would be spending my afternoon.

I head to my room to get changed into working clothes and find Ava there.

“It’s been so hard getting a hold of you today. Is something going on?” I ask.

Ava doesn’t say anything but continues to hang her uniform. My stomach drops.

“Have you been avoiding me?”

“Seriously?” she practically shouts at me startling me.

“You made out with Mason!”

“Ava, that-”
