Kenzie
Third on my list of things I like the most about Wellington is the food. Numbers one and two are the book den and the stables respectively.
It may sound ridiculous considering the Kings employ a five star chef and when we eat out it’s never at a place ranked lower than that. But at Wellington I get to enjoy it. There’s something to be said about getting to eat five star food without any of the awkward tension that usually comes with meals with the Kings.
I am stood in the lunch line trying to decide what to have for lunch when my roommate Ava asks.
“So which are you leaning towards, med school or law school?”
Medicine or law, those are my two options for college majors according to Serena.
She and Mark decided they don’t want everyone doing the same thing. Serena’s side of the family, the Colemans, own the 4th largest home appliances retailer in the country, she is the vice president of marketing of their group. Mark’s family business is in luxury car dealerships and property development, Mark is the CFO. Because of that marketing and finance are off the table.
Cassie is expected to run things one day so she is allowed to take business related courses in college. Not going to college is not an option.
“Kenzie did you hear me?” Ava says.
“I am choosing neither” I say.
“Don’t tell me you decided not to go? They will flip their literal minds!” Ava says.
“Don’t be ridiculous, of course I am going. I am just not going for medicine or law. I have decided on architecture, like my dad.”
“I thought Mr King is in finance?” Amara, one of our lunch mates asks.
“She obviously means her real dad, Amara” Ava replies giving Amara a look that she ignores as usual.
Ava and I are close, she is my best friend. Our friendship with Amara on the other hand is a result of sharing some of the same classes and a lunch period. Ava has little patience for her on most days.
We sit at our usual table. I am about to say something to dispel the awkwardness when notifications go off all around the cafeteria.
Both Ava and Amara’s phones go off too but mine doesn’t. I check to see if it is out of battery but it’s not.
“Kenzie!” Amara says looking ridiculously scandalized.
“What?” I ask.
Ava hands me her phone, I read the text from an unknown number:
Our favorite ship has sprung a leak. The culprit, a major case of beer-goggles. Mason has been spotted kissing the wrong King sister. Rip CASSON. – ANIMA
Attached is a picture of Mason and I lip locked.
