When she arrived at the edge of the glade, where her house could be seen, Megan was out of breath. She stopped for a moment to resume normal breathing and rest.

Megan had run so fast the distance from her home that her right side now ached. Having recovered from her run, she tried to see if she could notice the presence of any visitors.

Fortunately, it seemed that no one was there yet, but as she was still too far away to be absolutely certain, she started walking again. Just as she was beginning to feel satisfied that she had not been late, Megan saw something that made her stop suddenly. There they were. Attached to the wooden fence that surrounded the house were three horses, which were ruminating on the grass from time to time as they waited.

Oh, sweet Creator, they had already arrived!

All hopes of making a good impression on Count de Clare's son were blown away like dust in the wind.

So, you learn! She said to herself.

Foolish girl that you are, Elly would not be kept waiting. She nervously bit her lower lip.

Immediately she thought she could climb the wild cherry tree that stood near her bedroom window.

She had done this so many times! Without being seen, she could have avoided the embarrassment of delay.

But then she thought again. Surely her aunt had already warned them that she was not at home and if they had seen her come down from upstairs, they would have been quite astonished, and she would have made her aunt look bad too.

She therefore decided to muster up all her courage and to pull herself together. After a little tidying up of her dress and hair, she headed home again. Not surprisingly, her hair was particularly unruly that day, and the headlong rush had certainly not helped.

Megan passed through the wooden gate determined not to be embarrassed by anything or anyone. At the height of the large window, she heard the voices of the two knights and Elly coming from that room.

She tensed up a little, she felt like a thief. Perhaps it was because she had tried not to make noise by approaching, she told herself mentally. At that moment, they didn't know she was there and that gave her a bit of a head start on the impending encounter.

Arriving at the door, she took a deep breath before entering, adjusted her skirt again, then the bodice of her green dress, and finally pushed open the door to enter.

At the same moment that she started to push the entrance, on the other side, someone else started to pull the door. Suddenly removed from her foothold, Megan lost her balance and landed on someone who was definitely not her aunt.

Out of her mouth came a cry of surprise and disappointment.

Without warning, she found herself between two strong arms, which were supporting her to prevent that she fell to the ground, face down.
